Ram,

If there is no budget constraint go for 5100. Its much better than 3100.

18-55 is very very basic lens.

If possible exchange kit lens with some good lens with VR And lower A value lens like 18 -11X 3.5- 4

Some shops do buy back kit lens not all.

The d3100 ( low fps.+ Lower focus speed ) is good for
Still shots
Where ppl / pets / animal / kids pose for shots

The moment you wish to capture action. You will be disappointed
And since kids pets and wild life won't sit around and pose for you
The camera is not cut  out for that job

However its a good entry level cam for the not very tech inclined

Ditto for the lens

In order to capture far off distances
You need a much bigger focal length

18 - 200 or 28 - 300mm are reasonably good for zooming far off ( provided there is adequate light )
And these lenses will cost about 3 to 4 times the cost of the d3100
Overall. If u wish to begin at some point and not get too ambitious about capturing motion like nat geo pro's

Then d5100 is more suited for a budget cam

The d7000 is the most ideal one for the consumer level job ( as on date )

Semi pros use d300s. - RS 1 lac approx
( model will e replaced by d400 or similar by Aug / Sept )

Pros use d3variants. these cost in excess of 4000 usdollars
+ the lenses ( cheaper to buy a Nano)

Hi Gaurav,

Ya actually budget is a constraint here that is why I planned for D3100 any way I like D5100 also.
what will be the focal length of the lens which you specified. Actually I dont know much about the
lens category and lens types. I just want to took sports, wildlife and also my family portraits. So if
possible please suggest me a good lens for these kind of functionality.

Dear Ram,

A 18-55 mm is a very good kit lens that shall be a loyal friend in almost every situation. However, if you are interested in wildlife photography, then you shall find the zoom in the 18-55 very inadequate, most of the time.

While personally I'd suggest you a 55-200 in addition to the stock 18-55, you could also return your trade your stock 18-55 in favor of a 18-105 in case your purse is a bit tight.

Hi Shayon Pal &nix pix,

Thank you for your suggestions and finally according to your suggestions I will try to change my selection from D3100 to D5100.
Also, coming to lens part, I planned to buy an additional lens along with 18mm - 55mm, the model of lens is
AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED.

This one holds my budget also. So, is that ok? Shall i go ahead with this?

Ram,

Do remember that with two lenses, you shall have to keep switching between them as & when the situation demands. Make sure that you are okay with this. Of course, there is also a 18-200 mm lens that  is basically a combination of these two. Do give it a dekko if you can afford it. If not, then the combination of 18-55 and 55-200 shall serve you well for your amateur needs.

Your most welcome

Congratulations
On your d5100.

Like shayon. And jay You won't regret it.

I suggest you begin wit one lens at the moment

( unless and untill your taking a trip and need the bigger zoom )

Cos you won't get an additional discount on buying multiple lenses.

And a single lens to beginwit and learn is a good Idea 

+ by buying a single lens today you also save and secure the option of buying a better lens in the future

And wit time you will realize the
Advantage of not changing lenses

As we'll as advantage
Of buying expensive lenses wit lower f nos aka bigger aperture opening.

Btw. If and only if you live in mumbai. I can get you a v good deal. The absolute lowest rate wit 2 years India warranty.

Hi nix.pix,

Thanks for the offer. But i am residing in Bangalore now, so is it possible to get the same offer here too.

Also,
Shayon Pal you suggested for a single lens 18mm - 200mm but it costs 48000 indian rupee, so I cant afford that.

I will go for a single lens as nix suggested with 18mm - 55 mm and will try to update later.

Ram,

Shayon Pal &nix pix covered all.

I also recommend full range lens. Changing and carrying two lens is very painful.

You can check sigma or tamron lens. Little cheap as compare to Nikkor for same range.

I will inquire about Banglore

But even if its possible to get that price in Banglore
there is another basic problem

The distributor is all sold out on stock and will not be able to
Supply anything before 10th to 15th of August.

Is that acceptable to your. Time schedule ?

Ya it is ok with me.

I checked in Nikon website and it says

Nikon D5100 (with AF-S 18-55mm VR Kit Lens) INR 39,950

AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED  INR 12,450

The price I have mentioned in the list. So for how much I can get it in bangalore.

I had recently bought the NIKON D5100 for Rs 38,000, in Delhi. And you should be able to get the 55-200 for about 11K as the regular market price.

This is an excellent Idea  that didn't strike me earlier

The purists don't like anything other than nikor glass  on Nikon body.

But i am sure that 3rdparty won't matter to hobbyists like us.

Do explore

A Google search should turn out plenty of comparisons for the same or similar focal length range in question

Kenrockwell
And
Dp review
Are 2 sites that come in mind for such and more

don't evaluate 100 % crop comparisons

Simply compare the general max size you are most likely to print / use / preserve in Digi media.

For eg 10 x 12 inches instead of the 5 ft poster size

Also. Do keep in mind
That certain sw's can make up for
The side effects of 3rdparty lenses

So one can save money by buying such lenses. And yet present awesome. ( professional quality ) pix by simply devoting a Lill bit of time to sw editing.
