Hi all,

The Uni of Adelaide Library has their last webinar for 2021 coming up, details below:

DH Lab: New approaches and humanities @ University of Adelaide

Wednesday 27 October 2021, 1.00pm to 2.00pm, online

New digital sources of socially and culturally relevant information are enabling new ways of approaching traditional research questions, while new methods and tools are allowing us to view traditional sources in new ways. In this webinar we will hear from researchers that are using social media, machine learning, and sometimes both, in their work.

Speakers:

Ben Nagy, University of Adelaide, uses computational stylometry in authorship attribution of Latin epic poetry. This kind of analysis uses computational methods to analyse stylistic and with enough data, researchers can offer a statistical opinion as to whether a certain author did (or didn’t) produce a certain work.

Xinyuan Xu, Research School of Humanities and the Arts at the Australian National University, is considering whether machine learning and natural language processing techniques can be applied to automatically detect suicide ideation in the online environment, and providing an up-to-date understanding of grief as it manifests online.

Associate Professor Lewis Mitchell, School of Mathematical Sciences, is developing new mathematical and statistical methods to understand information flow in social networks. Anticipated benefits of this project include better understanding of how echo chambers may form in social networks, predictive models for how misinformation can spread online, and a framework for intercomparison of AI methods applied to digital data on individuals.
