Hello academics, Researchers and Colleagues,

In May 2021 you were part of our very successful Symposium – Archives to Argument. Thank you.

Since then, we have been asked repeatedly to organize another event and so we have decided to host symposium this October. I hope you don’t mind me reaching out to you again, but I was wondering if you or your fellow researchers and/or colleagues would like to be involved.

The theme of this symposium is around diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) and the “Voice of the People”.  Last time we were featuring research projects and digital humanities activities, this time we would like the symposium to be an exploration of people and activism.

The symposium aligns with the current political climate in Australia where we are raising the issue for “Recognition through a Voice”: https://voice.gov.au/  The voice to parliament vote will be the first referendum in Australia since 1999, with Australians asked to vote on the following question: A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice in Parliament.

We are looking for speakers/presenters (virtually via Zoom, likely pre-recorded) to talk about creating a culture of diversity and change.  The presentations are to be 20–25-minute recorded presentations (or live if the time zone permits). The subject areas we are interested in are decolonization, women’s rights, counterculture, social movements, disabilities research, LGBTQ+ issues, legal issues around social movements, refugees etc.

The Symposium image and statement are shown in the attachment; it will give you a flavour for what we are planning.  The overarching theme being:

“One person plus one typewriter constitutes a movement”* and if that person with the typewriter also has access to accurate reliable and authoritative research then their views can be even more potent. Not all movements and revolutions have been positive and without harm, but we have the opportunity, before we take to the “typewriter” to review and learn from the lessons of the past. By using Gale primary sources to reflect on the decisions made around Refugees, Decolonization, LGBTQ movements, people with Disability policies, Environmental decisions…and many more significant societal changes – surely gives us a better insight to any possible outcomes.

*Reverend Dr. Anna Pauline "Pauli" Murray (November 20, 1910 – July 1, 1985)

We would love you to be involved again, and please feel free to pass this onto anyone you feel may wish to contribute – my details are shown below. Our intention is to present a program of wide-ranging thoughts and research to inspire, and maybe challenge everyone’s thinking during this time of change.

Regards
