Dear All,
It was great seeing many of you last month for the Joint
Reading Meeting for Student Modeling and Personalization in Computer Science
and
SPLICE LLM Reading Groups. For those interested but couldn't attend, please take a look at the recording
here. There won't be a meeting tomorrow.
Starting this October, the SPLICE LLM Reading Group and Student Modeling and Personalization in Computer Science group reading sessions will be held
separately on the second and last Friday of each month at 10:00-11:00 am. This time is selected as most countries are within their waking hours (with a bit of stretch!) The information about each session and instructions on how to join the groups
are stated below.
We require two moderators for each of the groups to organize presentations and advertise the sessions. I strongly encourage
PhD students to volunteer for either of these sessions. The moderator role for each of the sessions is mentioned below. Please refer to the end of this email if you are a PhD student interested in contributing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Student Modeling and Personalization in Computer Science and Personalization in CS:
- Time: Last Friday of each month from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
- Zoom: The sessions will be held remotely through the provided
Zoom link. Upon joining the Google group, you will automatically receive the
calendar invites.
- Student Modeling and Personalization in CS Google Group: To join the group, click this link.
- Agenda: There will be a paper presentation each month. Authors will be invited to present their work, and non-authors can also present a job they have found interesting and valuable to the community. The sessions will conclude with discussions about
the work, future research and development directions, and collaboration plans.
- Scheduling Spreadsheet: There are three important tabs on the
spreadsheet. 1) 2024 Reading Meeting Schedule: you can volunteer for a presentation on this spreadsheet, choosing a date and title that interests you. Here, you can also find prior presentation information, including the recorded sessions.
2) Suggestions for Next Presentations: If a paper interests you but you don't want to present it, you can add it here. We will invite their authors to present their work. 3) Prior Presentations: Last years' presentation information is here.
- Moderator: The moderator will be responsible for organizing presentations each month, including inviting authors (if no one has volunteered already), sharing the advertisements, holding the Zoom sessions, and inserting presentation information on
the spreadsheet.

SPLICE LLM Working Groups Meeting
- Time: Second Friday of each month from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
- Zoom link: The sessions will be held remotely through the provided
Zoom link. Upon joining the Google group, you will automatically receive the
calendar invites.
- SPLICE LLM Google Group Link: To join this group, click this link.
- Agenda: There will be 5-6 short presentations (~5) about the most recent work on utilizing LLMs for education.
Presenters can give short formal presentations or use this time to keep everyone up with their current research on this topic. The second half of the meeting will be spent on open-ended discussions around the presented work, future research and development
directions, and collaboration plans.
- Scheduling Spreadsheet: There are two important tabs on the
spreadsheet. 1) 2024-2025 LLM SPLICE Schedule: If you are interested in a short formal or informal presentation (either your work or sth you are interested in sharing), you can add your name as one of the six presenters for a desired date. Here,
you can also find prior presentation information, including the recorded sessions. 2) Suggestions for Next Presentations: If a paper interests you but you don't want to present it, you can add it here. We will invite their authors to present their work.
- Moderator: The moderator will be responsible for organizing the presentations each month, ensuring at least three presenters for each session, holding the Zoom sessions, sending reminders before sessions, and inserting presentation information on
the spreadsheet.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To PhD students: I strongly encourage you to serve as a moderator (rotating yearly) and/or a presenter, as it will be a great professional development opportunity. As a moderator, you get to communicate with prominent researchers in this field,
broaden your network, invite authors of work you are interested in learning more about, and get your name out. As a presenter, you can discuss your work with the community and get early feedback and future directions, improve your presentation skills, and
get your work known.
