I invite you the Student Modeling and Personalization Reading Group meeting tomorrow 10 am Oct 25.
I will present the following paper from a recent conference.
Title: Students Struggle with Concepts in Dijkstra’s Algorithm [presented at ICER 2024]
Authors: Artturi Tilanterä, Juha Sorva, Otto Seppälä, Ari Korhonen
Abstract: Teachers who are aware of potential student misconceptions teach better than teachers who do not. In this article, we focus on misconceptions in the context of teaching and learning graph algorithms: we seek to discover student misconceptions about
Dijkstra’s shortest-path algorithm and related concepts. We observed and interviewed fourteen students who worked on a visual simulation task involving the algorithm; we qualitatively analyzed these data to explore the students’ mistakes and their underlying
reasons. We find, among other things, that students conflate concepts such as spanning tree, fringe, and priority queue and that students may neglect the greedy and dynamic-programming aspects of the algorithm; we also identify usability issues in the visualization
tool we employed. These findings suggest that teachers and tool designers need to take great care to help students tease apart the key concepts in graph algorithms.

Agenda: There will be a paper presentation each month. Authors will be invited to present their work, and non-authors can also present a job they have found interesting and valuable to the community. The sessions will conclude with discussions about
the work, future research and development directions, and collaboration plans.

spreadsheet. 1) 2024 Reading Meeting Schedule: you can volunteer for a presentation on this spreadsheet, choosing a date and title that interests you. Here, you can also find prior presentation information, including the recorded sessions.
2) Suggestions for Next Presentations: If a paper interests you but you don't want to present it, you can add it here. We will invite their authors to present their work.
You're also welcome to choose a paper that interests in this list to volunteer and present for the next student modeling reading meeting, like

Moderator: The moderator will be responsible for organizing presentations each month, including inviting authors (if no one has volunteered already), sharing the advertisements, holding the Zoom sessions, and inserting presentation
