“Digital Ghosts - Access to Web Archives through Data and Creativity” explores how creative visualizations and interactive installations can communicate both richness and absences in web archive collections to public audiences.

In this presentation, Dr. Andrea Kocsis, Chancellor's Fellow in Humanities Informatics at The University of Edinburgh, will describe how this project worked with a hand-curated collection of Scottish websites collected over more than a decade to supplement the UK Web Archive’s annual domain crawl. The project embraced the collection’s unevenness, incompleteness, and bias as part of the material to be communicated, and across the exhibition, absence became a way to make the web’s temporality and fragility perceptible.

The talk introduces five interactive and visual works that explored themes including link and content decay, geographical bias, curatorial selection, crisis archiving, and the disappearance of online music cultures. Treating web archive access as a communication problem, Digital Ghosts proposes a creative practice that foregrounds design and collaboration among archivists, researchers, and communicators as key to widening public engagement with web archives.
