Negotiating Open Metadata into your Contracts

23 September 2021 | 11:00 - 12:30 US Eastern (View in your time zone) | Online

REGISTRATION: https://crossref.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcudumsrTooE9cyOZPcJkPyBw8h3zfw-LHH

Contract negotiations are important tools for incentivizing publishers and vendors to move to more open business models.  Researchers and research institutions have been working together to best plan for and accomplish this shared vision.  As part of this transformative process, open metadata must be included to ensure broad access to scholarly resources and other research outputs.

As part of Metadata 20/20’s “Your Turn” campaign, we are exploring how open metadata can be negotiated into contract language. Join us for a panel discussion about this important topic including speakers:

  • Adam Der, Max Plank Digital Library

  • Laura Hanscom, Massachusetts Institute of Technology - MIT

  • Lisa Mackinder, California Digital Library - CDL

  • Catherine Nancarrow, FORCE11 Researcher Bill of Rights and Principles Working Group

  • and members of the Metadata 20/20 community

The discussion will:·

  • Share stories from those who have incorporated metadata clauses, including how they did so and what they learned in the process.

  • Highlight organizations that are starting the exploration process of including contractual metadata clauses, with why they feel this step is important.

  • Showcase how all stakeholder groups including librarians, administrators, publishers, and researchers themselves must be involved in this important issue.

  • Provide a forum for collecting resources to support the documentation of guidelines, best practices, and/or tips and tricks about metadata in contracts.

This event is ONLINE and offered at NO COST, though we request that you register in advance to receive the information to sign in: https://crossref.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcudumsrTooE9cyOZPcJkPyBw8h3zfw-LHH

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

About Metadata 20/20:   Metadata 20/20 (metadata2020.org) is a collaborative community group that advocates richer, connected, and reusable, open metadata for all research outputs, which will advance scholarly pursuits for the benefit of society. We aim to create awareness and resources for all who have a stake in creating and using scholarly metadata. We aim to demonstrate why richer metadata should be the scholarly community’s top priority, how we can all evaluate ourselves and improve, and what can be achieved when we work harder, and work together.
