Links to outside websites not working correctly

For some reason when using the simple linking technique in Dreamweaver
by highlighting the text then typing the URL in the link box below the
links never work once uploaded to the net. I suspect the problem is
that it is trying to find the URL on my I drive. For example a simple
link to the flickr website comes up as

I:\bbsc_303\webpage\www8\www.flickr.com

how can I remedy this?
