Hello -

Struggling to get my fixed station digirig up and running and have searched this group for the issue with no success.

Set up is digipi running on a Raspberry Pi 4B, a digirig mobile connected to a Kenwood TM-V71A via the 6 pin DIN packet port on the back of the radio.

After resolving a hot receive audio issue by turning down the gain for CAPTURE in alsamixer direwolf does not seem to like to stay connected to the digirig throwing the error: Audio input device 0 error code -19: No such device

Per the PktLog below it appears that direwolf is connected to the digirig for a period of time but then loses the connection.  It eventually errors out completely with: Terminating after audio device 0 input failure.

My troubleshooting procedure has included using the digirig with all the same cables attached to a Windows 11 laptop running direwolf and PinPointAPRS.  This set up never lost connectivlity even when transmitting so it appears that RFI is not the issue.  I will admit that I am a Linux noob so I might be missing something.

Welcome any suggestions and appreciate the help.

The audio device is disappearing.   In my experience this is always RF
on the USB cable.  You can confirm this in SysLog.  It will complain about
EMI (electro magnetic interference).  Ferrites?    Pi broadside to antenna
in near-field?

A laptop will deal with RF better than a Pi/usb combo too.

Hello Brian

I defer to Craig and yes I too have come to him on bended knee asking for advice.

At the moment I am in Fl and not near my radio stuff but I ran into some issues like yours and for what it is worth this helped me with trouble shooting

1) I have a mag mount antenna with about a 20 foot Tx line. When I connected this to my radio that helped with the AUDIIO = 0 issues. What was happening was my HT with a rubber duck was only 3 feet from the raspberry Pi Zero 2W I was working with. So if RF signal strength was an issue I can reduce the TX power of the HT but then I can’t hit our repeater. So using full power with the mag mount but about 20” from the Pi things worked like magic so that was an RFI issue.

2) I am lucky to own two HT radios one is a Baofeng 82 (see above) which is not a very good radio but for what I am doing (low cost digipeater effort) it should do. That is connected with an All In One Connector to my R Pi and as noted my mag mount antenna. OK cool this is KJ4ZZB my call.

I also have a Kenwood TH 74A HT connected to a rubber duck, USB data cable (built in TNC !!!) and attached to a laptop running PinPointAPRS. This is my receive station. This is K9YRO. My Daughters call.

From the Baofeng / digipi I open aprs/tnc and webchat. I send a message from KJ4ZZB to K9YRO  like  "test 1". Both radios are on 144.390. (for other reasons) .

If I see an APRS text message for K9YRO on PinPointAPRS this tells me the RF chain and APRS text process is working on the Digipi SW + Rasp Pi Zero 2W + USB C cable (with chokes) + AIOC + Baofeng 82 + Tx line + Mag Mount antenna to RF to Kenwood TH 74A + built in TNC + USB  cable  + Laptop + Win 11 + PinPointAPRS.

This helps to remove a lot of variables.
