Hello,  I just got my DigiPi setup to use APRS webchat.  I am a complete newbie to Digipi and APRS chat.  I am able to send txt messages successfully every time from my webchat UI but no matter who replies to my text i never get back a msg on my webchat UI.  Not sure what else to check, any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you
Shannon N5OOO

Hi Shannon,

WebChat only listens on RF (not internet), so you need to make sure you're
in range of local digipeaters/igates.  If you're concurrently monitoring PktLog,
you must ignore lines starting with "ig>tx" as those are from the Internet, not RF.

if it helps,

Thanks for your reply.  I do not understand any of what you explained.  I am very new to this.  I am assuming that sending a txt to SMS is going out my digipi to my radio (UV5R), then that sends it out on freq 144.390 where its heard and either forwards it or sends out to the internet somewhere and from there gets texted to a cell number.   Why does it not work in reverse?  I am not familiar with a digipeater/igate  but will do some googling.   If a digipearer/igate is required in my area, is that something I can easily make?  I also do not know what "i must ignore lines with ig-tx" means. I followed the digipi video i saw for my setup.  Does there happen to be a manual for Digipi?  There are no clubs in my area so no elders i may ask these kind of questions.   I am happy to play around and could use some help but I dont want to be a bother either.  I have never done any kind of digital radio stuff other than DMR with my 878 but that was pretty to setup.

Sorry for all the questions

Hi Shannon,

Many igates are listen-only, so you could send an SMS message, but possibly not receive a reply.

The UV5R is also a very poor receiver, but a good transmitter, this would also contribute to your observation.

If you want to run a DigiPeater in your area, simply turn [on] "APRS Digipeater" on DigiPi.

The manual for DigiPi is mostly at digipi.org and to a lesser extent at github.com/craigerl/digipi (click wiki).

Great questions!

Craig,
Thanks again.  I understand the UV5R is not a great radio and I normally only use it to listen but thought it would be ok for APRS stuff.  It is hooked up to my outdoor Diamond x30a antenna. Couple more questions please.  Would i need to create a second digipi with another radio to be used as a digipeater so that it can stay up and running in that mode?  Would my digipeater work for others in my area automatically to allow them to recieve txt messages? Like the ones I was not receiving.  Is a Raspberry Pi running digipi in Digipeater mode robust enough to handle traffic (not that there would be that much) or would there be a better way to handle this...or am I getting over my head...it happens : )   I know these questions are starting to get out of the realm of DigiPi...sorry.

Thank you and have a great day

Shannon

Yes, all your assertions are correct here.  Please setup a local Digipeater if there are
none in your area.  checkout https://aprs.fi/ .  Your digipeater will work for everyone
in your area and enable two-way messaging on RF and Internet/sms.

Get that X30 up high if you can too, shortest amount of thick coax.

cool,
