I got my DigiPeater up and running and has been great so far.  While reading up on some APRS info i ran across some talking about how an igate is typically better than a digipeater as it extends the range of communications while a digipeater only passes along packets to another station which passes it along and so on.  Too many digipeater in an area can cause problems by bouncing data back and forth.  My question...Would be it better to run a igate and a digipeater at the same time?  Does my DigiPi digipeater already act as an igate and a digipeater?  in the pktlog i see entries like these,  [ig>tx], [0.3], [0.4],  [0 L], [0H].  I am not sure i understand these entries.  Could someone explain them?  If my digipeater is only a repeater currently can it also be set to be an igate at the same time?  If so how could i go about that?  Here are some examples of log entries i am trying to understand.

I would like to understand this log more.  Is there a good reference online that i could read up on?  Currently i am not trying to jump in with both feet, i just want to understnad the digipeater and/or igate i am currently running.  Once i understand this more i can start branching out.

Sorry for all the question.  This is really cool stuff and i am so new to it all.

Thank you

Hi Shannon,

The DigiPi APRS Digipeater is also an igate.

In addition to being a TNC/igate, gating all RF traffic to the internet, the Digipeater repeats RF to RF
packets with WIDE1-1 still in the routing table, and also relays message-type packets from the internet
to RF if the target callsign is within 160km of the DigiPi.

[0L] is a transmission
[ig>tx] is the internet requesting that we transmit a packet on RF, we ignore them unless they're message-type/160km
[0.3] is a received packet on RF (has "audio level" in the report)

An igate is always a good idea.  A Digipeater WIDE1-1 is a good idea unless there is a nearby
Digipeater that you can't hear (but most people can) -- collisions.

A WIDE2-1 is a bad idea you're in range of 3 or 4 other WIDE2's, DigiPi is not a WIDE2-1 Digi - these
are high level, on mountains, covering most of a state.

if it helps,
-craig

Craig.   That is great news and great info.  I really like this digipi!!!!!  This is really a pretty amazing little package.  I can't wait to learn more about APRS.    What recommend as a good source to read up on aprs info? I see lots of different icons I see - numbers at the end of call signs and I'm not exactly sure what all these mean.  Are there certain ways of setting icons, numbers at the end of call signs, are they set in stone what they need to be, like is a Digipeater always supposed to be a certain number, is a handheld or a qth radio supposed to be a certain number or is it just simply you have multiple devices and you just make them one through whatever.   I'm sure this info is out on the internet somewhere but again I know this isn't new but I find lots of information but some of it seems like it's really really old and I'm not sure whether there is new updated info or that is still the current info.

there are no "rules", but there are conventions as to the numeric suffix
on callsigns,

3 = weather
10 = winlink
4/5 = node

If you search around you'll find more conventions.

cool,
