I have had two challenges, first of which I "think" I have resolved:

1.  The AOIC would fail and no longer show as connected as soon as I tried to connect DigiPeater or other outgoing service but would show up before then.  I went in to raspi-config, and set the IC2 interface to operate, and that seemed to resolve the failure when starting a service.

2.  WebChat does not function, but instead I get the message:  "Unable to connect to WebChat service, please ensure service is enabled.

Welcome any thoughts on either - not sure if I am doing something incorrectly and not sure how to troubleshoot it.

I am wrong about #1 fixing the issue - the AOIC interface fails as soon as it tries to send a packet:

[ig>tx] N1RCN>APRS,RS0ISS*,qAO,KD4ADC-2::KD5JGD-2 :Hello from EL97 (Live)
[0L] KC3XXX-2>APDW18,WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1:}N1RCN>APRS,TCPIP,KC3GTC-2*::KD5JGD-2 :Hello from EL97 (Live)
Audio write error: No such device
Error preparing after error: No such device
Audio input device 0 error code -19: No such device
Audio write error: No such device

Wonder if this could be a RPi hardware issue?  I have swapped out AIOCs, and it still occurs.

Hi Steve,

This is RF getting to the USB cable.  A ferrite bead is required, ideally two passes.  In addition
you can relocate the antenna with coax, reduce power, or make sure the pi is not broad-side
to the antenna.

Audio input device 0 error code -19: No such device

If you're using an HT, the USB cable becomes the other half of the antenna.  The Pi doesn't like this.

... and let us know,

Thank you, Craig.

It is a Baofeng HT.  Thanks for the suggestion - I have two ferrites on each end of the data cable to the AOIC, are you suggesting adding loops in the beads?  And should I add ferrites to the power cable as well?

Thank you!

It can't hurt to add beads to the power cable.  You might try a different bead too.

These seem to work for me,

Without those beads, my baofeng setup locks up on transmit every time.  Yaesu HT's too.

Data operations best practices:

  • Relocate antenna with coax
  • Reduce power
  • Change length of USB cable
  • Ensure Pi is not broad-side to antenna
  • Ferrite beads on cables and antenna feed point

if it helps,

Thanks Craig - that did it!  I reduced power, moved the Pi, and swapped out the cable for one that originally came with a SDR and had ferrites, and it stopped failing/locking up on transmit!  I will be purchasing the ferrites you suggested.
