to DigiPi
So I have been using my little Digipi rig as a portable Winlink server and when I use my laptop to Digi Rig Lite to almost any radio it works great.

I have tried using Radiomail (IOS) in both a wired configuration (ipad to Digi Rig Lite to radio) and I have never been able to get it to either completely sign in or finish the exchange. It works fine into other Winlink nodes.

Now I just got a VGC N76 which has it’s own TNC so I can bluetooth iphone or ipad to it to use Radiomail wirelessly. It works great into a local Winlink node, but of course, it will not work with my DigiPi node.

Anyone have any thoughts? I will attach a screenshot of the last attempt.

Thanks!

I can't say for sure, and I don't have radio mail handy.

It sets up SABM connection, but it might be doing SABME (extended) async-binary-mode,
and waiting for a different response.  just a wild guess really.

With the linux kernel dropping ax.25 networking, we'll need to switch to something else
like direwolf's agwpe port somehow, but I don't know how to make that trigger the RMSLinux
server and carry out a winlink connection.... yet.

It's not a AX.25 v2.2 issue. Direwolf knows to use v2.0 when it receives a SABM command. The connect proceeds normally at first, but then hangs. Radiomail is waiting for the gateway to send the SID, which it never does. Radiomail times out and sends a disconnect, which the gateway acknowledges. Something is stuck in RMSGW. Pretty sure I test Radiomail and DigiPi on earlier versions, but I have not tested v2.2. I'll give it a try later....

In the meantime, since DigiPi has now screwed up your WInlink account information, please edit the RMSGW files and put the correct name and address information to update your record.

I use RadioMail every day.  Maybe I'm not understanding your goal here, but even if you could connect them, which I don't believe you can, you don't want to because it's not necessary.

Right, if you're going to maintain an official full-time winlink "server" please update the
channel and sysop files with your personal/station info.

Click Shell
Password: raspberry

sudo remount
sudo nano /etc/rmsgw/channels.xml
sudo nano /etc/rmsgw/sysop.xml

DigiPi is using the Linux kernel for AX25 networking, not direwolf, as
direwolf is just
a slaved KISS TNC.

The Linux kernel passes connections to  YOURCALL-10 via interface ax0 to
ax25d, which in turn runs rmsgw, as defined in /etc/ax25/ax25d.conf:

[KM6LYW-10 VIA radio]
NOCALL   * * * * * *  L
default  * * * * * *  - rmsgw /usr/local/bin/rmsgw rmsgw -l debug -P %d %U

I don't know if this helps, but that's the current process.

I would say everyone needs to do this, or make sure you never  turn on the Winlink Email Server, even just for a minute, otherwise it will corrupt your Winlink account.

I really do not understand why this is not part of the Initialize function, what is the harm in collecting this information and setting the files up correctly, even if the Winlink Email Server is never used?

94.6% of users will never deploy a real Winlink Server, and if they do,
there
is an extensive process to become a sysop at winlink.org, and client
configuration.

The Initialize page causes many new ops to stumble already, so I keep
it at an absolute minimum to serve the 80/20 rule.

plus there is the concerns around privacy, copa laws and other legal
concerns around
data-collection in general, for minors in particular.  The Winlink
organization
doesn't mitigate any of this so I can't just autoforward private
information to them
without opt-in, etc.

just my observations,

Then the email server should be disabled by default. During initialization, ask if the user wants to enable the email server, and if the answer is yes, prompt for the required information.

Most uses who have enabled it do not realize they need to edit the gateway configuration files (why would they, there is no indication) and therefore corrupt their Winlink accounts. There has to be some warning or lock here.

You have one user right now who went through the process to get gateway authorization, and fired up the server without configuring the files. He is not comfortable working in the CLI and doesn't know how to edit files. You could say he then shouldn't be using the feature, but is that really the right solution?

Don't get me wrong, I like having this feature, but the implementation as it stands is not correct IMHO.

Hey all,

I've been running a packet Winlink email server via Digipi for at least 6 months without any issues. When researching, I did do my due diligence and hunting down the proper configuration settings via the group.io site. I've never had any issues from Winlink or on my site and test the system at least weekly.

Scott, Winlink server is disabled by default. I would hope anyone who has interest in setting it up would first research the requirements to host a server and then research the requirements to set up DigiPi appropriately. Maybe a Winlink server writeup in the GitHub page would be helpful.

Craig, thanks for making DigiPi simple to use. I have one running a filling APRS digipeater and a second one running packet winlink. I've considered a 3rd one for AX.25, but don't want to overdo it here.

I have been running my Winlink server for about 6 months as well, and it has worked beautifully except when an attempt is made to send via Radiomail. Nobody seems to have noticed that it changed information on my Winlink account. I have corrected my information on the Winlink account page and will do likewise on the Shell before I use it again. I also sent an email to the Winlink administrator to see how they are affected by this.

Craig, thanks so much for all you do. This is an amazing little piece of kit and it is serving our local ARES team very well.

Now, if I could just find a damn solution to Radiomail :-)
