Hi I am just about to start a self build & need some advice (I am no
mechanic or engineer)
I have purchased a Benford 1 ton dumper which is fitted with a Petter
PH1 diesel engine.

It used to work OK but since it has been left for approx 2 months it
has developed a problem with starting.
I have:
- cleaned the fuel tank out (it was disgusting)
- & refilled with clean diesel
- cleaned the fuel lines
- changed the fuel filter (it was disgusting)
- had the fuel pump reconditioned (it had rusted)

To test if I disconnect the fuel line to the diesel injector (top of
the engine) & turn the crank fuel spits out but then stops spitting
even when I continue turning the crank
1) Is this normal?
2) Any other ideas on what to check?
All suggestions are very welcome I am at a loss..

Hi Self build

When you crank the engine you should be able to hear a noise like a
quack and this is the point at which the injector should inject. From
what you say it sounds like fuel starvation. There is enough to spit
out initially but then it is running out?

As a start I would work methodically through the fuel system starting
at the tank to check that the diesel is coming through as it should be
and bleed out any air from the filter etc. You may have to crank it
for a while to bleed all the air out of the system.

If you have already done this then we will need to think again.

Hi Jim - excellent & prompt advice thanks
I take it from what you are saying that the fuel spitting through to
the injector should be continuous (so there sounds the problem)

I have just found a new fuel tank online so I will replace this to
eliminate one potential problem.
Question: if I take all of the fuel lines off, how is it best to clean
them?

Thanks in advance

I would blow them out with an air line but be careful not to blow a
load of diesel into your eyes or something.

I stand here today, a beaten man! - I need help!
I have followed all advice & even gone further - changed the fuel tank
& renewed the fuel lines.
I have cranked, I have towed the dumper BUT still no sign of life!
I give up so does anyone know of an engineer who works the Berkshire
area (Winkfield) as this machine is too good condition to be sitting
idle?
Thanks
