Night on Earth is a 1991 art comedy-drama film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. It is a collection of five vignettes, taking place during the same night, concerning the temporary bond formed between taxi driver and passenger in five cities: Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki. The action in the vignettes takes place at the same time, moving from Los Angeles in the United States to Helsinki, Finland. The scene in each city appears to occur later and later in the night due to the changing time zones. Jarmusch wrote the screenplay in about eight days, and the choice of certain cities was largely based on the actors with whom he wanted to work.[1] The soundtrack of the same name is by Tom Waits. The Criterion Collection has released the movie on DVD and Blu-ray.
As evening falls, tomboy cabby Corky picks up Hollywood executive Victoria Snelling from the airport, and as Corky drives, Victoria tries to conduct business on her phone. Despite their extreme differences socially, the two develop a certain connection. When Victoria suggests that cab driving is not much of a career, Corky counters that her dream in fact is to become a mechanic. During the ride, Victoria, who is a casting agent, comes to realise that Corky would be ideal for a part in a movie she is casting, but Corky rejects the offer because she intends to be a mechanic. The taxi is a 1985 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Wagon.
Helmut, an immigrant from East Germany who was a clown in his home country, has found work as a taxi driver. After dark, he picks up a passenger named YoYo, a streetwise young man who wants to go to Brooklyn. Increasingly alarmed at Helmut's inability to handle an automatic transmission, ignorance of New York geography, and feeble command of the English language, YoYo takes over the wheel. During the drive, YoYo sees his sister-in-law Angela on the street and forces her into the cab to take her back home. Helmut is clearly amused by the vituperation between the two. After Angela and Yoyo depart, Helmut struggles to drive back to Manhattan, muttering "New York...New York."The taxi is a 1983 Ford LTD Crown Victoria.
At night, a cab picks up two drunk African diplomats, who mock the lowly driver and find it hilarious that he is from the Ivory Coast. In French, when he says he is ivoirien, they say il voit rien (he can't see a thing). Sick of their insults, he throws them out, forgetting to get money off them. Next he picks up an attractive young woman, who is blind. As she cannot see the colour of his skin, he asks her where she thinks he is from. After a moment's thought, she says the Ivory Coast. Prickly and sexually provocative, she rejects most of his efforts to be friendly, regarding him as beneath her, but he is genuinely fascinated by her and her predicament. So much so that, after dropping her off, he watches her walk beside a canal in the dark and he drives into another car, whose driver angrily accuses him of being blind. The taxi is a 1980 Peugeot 504.
In the early morning hours, an eccentric cabbie picks up a priest. As he drives, he starts to confess his sins. Much to the priest's discomfort, he goes into great detail about how he discovered his sexuality, first with a pumpkin and then with a sheep, then details a love affair he had with his brother's wife, miming the actions and mouthing the cries. Already ailing, overwhelmed by the barrage of unwanted information, the priest has a fatal heart attack. Unable to revive him, the cabbie leaves him on a bench to be found once it is light. The taxi is a 1976 Fiat 128.
After an evening spent drinking heavily, three workers, one of whom has just been fired from his job and has passed out, climb into a cab to return home. On the way, the two conscious workers talk about the terrible situation their unconscious friend is in, being out of work and having to face a divorce and a pregnant daughter. The driver, Mika, then tells them all the saddest story they have ever heard. The workers are terribly moved and depressed by the story, and even become unsympathetic toward their drunken, laid-off companion. Leaving him in the cab, they stagger off to their homes. Mika wakes him, takes payment and leaves. Worker sits on the ground, passing neighbours greet him and he replies back. The taxi is a 1973 Volvo 144.
Today the official color for New York City taxi cabs is not just any sort of yellow, but Dupont M6284 yellow or its equivalent, says Fromberg. Recently, light green cabs were added, but they are only allowed to pick up fares in the outer boroughs and northern Manhattan.
Thousands of visitors to Rome, Florence and other popular destinations have struggled to get a taxi over recent weeks, forced to wait for hours and often in hot sunshine at train stations, airports, and city centers.
Meloni, who is due take her holiday later this month, is determined to find a solution, according to a government statement earlier this week. This would require an agreement with powerful taxi drivers associations to overhaul a 1992 norm which keeps the number of licenses low, protecting their earnings.
The taxi lobby is symbolic of how difficult it is to open up competition in Italy. The lobby has outsized political influence compared to its size, and for years has capped the number of permits available amid little transparency on how they are assigned.
The right-wing coalition Meloni leads, whose parties have traditionally protected taxi drivers, is working on a new decree. It would allow local administrations to increase the number of licenses by about 20% to 30%, according to officials familiar with the plan. The measures could be approved as soon as Monday, the people said, even if a delay is possible given the issue is politically sensitive.
I used Italian with everyone I could: hotel staff, tour guides, store clerks, taxi drivers, florists, the people at the next table. I spoke it to anyone who would let me try (and nearly everyone did!). I made restaurant reservations on Italian webpages, coordinated taxis via WhatsApp (where I could spell check and proofread, too), and communicated in Italian with the front desk. When restaurant staff greeted me in English, I responded with "Buonasera!" and a smile and continued on in Italian. I always said grazie and never thank you. I woke up every morning thinking "ITALIANO!!!"
But, a few months ago, the Uber company reached an agreement with the Italian taxi consortium operating ItTaxi and now one can also use the Uber App to summon a taxi part of the ItTaxi app network. In other words ItTaxi and Uber are interchangeable and one can use either.
Just got back from York, England where Uber X and other levels are very available. Uber App there also gives you the option to call a local taxi at sometimes a lesser rate and pay with credit card associated with your Uber account. Sounds good that it is available now in Rome because you will not only know your fare in advance, but also be sure you will be paying with a creidit card through the app and not be asked for euros.
Even if you stick to "mainstream" Italian destinations, you can still spice up your time in Italy. Ride a vaporetto (a local form of taxi boat) from Venice to the colorful island of Burano, or take a westward train ride from the port city of La Spezia to the lush coast of Cinque Terre. These are great alternatives to going south and east to Florence or Pisa.
On my first trip to NYC when I was 15, taking a taxi down to Little Italy for a heaping plate of lasagna was an important event for me. Of course, now I know I could have taken the yellow N, Q, R, or W subway lines to Canal Street and saved myself $25.

New York City is known for (arguably) hosting some of the best Italian cuisine in the country. We rounded up some of the best options for trying flavorful dishes with attention to quality ingredients. Doesn't hurt if you can sample some Italian wine or a negroni while you're at it. Our selections pull stand-outs from across the boroughs, even if all of these restaurants are worth a trip by train or taxi. And yes, Little Italy and the West Village are obvious choices.
This is kind of peripheral but I drove a taxi nights in the early 80s and Mr. Manganaro was a regular pick up at precisely three am every morning. He was dapper and impossibly chipper at that hour and loved to talk all the way to Ninth Avenue where some workers were already waiting.
Italy is in the midst of testing a programme to offer free taxi rides for party-goers in a bid to curb incidents of drunk driving and deadly accidents. This is part of an initiative commissioned by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, the pilot project for which will run until mid-September.
However, there are cases when leaving a gratuity is absolutely appropriate, expected, and appreciated. Whether for an aperitivo and snacks in Venice, the services of a hotel porter or concierge in Rome, or a taxi ride from the airport in Milan, this guide covers whether you should tip in Italy, and, if so, how much to leave.
Scorsese: The goddess-whore complex. You're raised to worship women, but you don't know how to approach them on a human level, on a sexual level. That's the thing with Travis, the DeNiro character - the taxi driver. The girl he falls for, the Cybill Shepherd character - it's really important that she's blond, a blue-eyed goddess.
