WinRar is a good option Mam. It's available for free. You can download
it from Net.
There's another called PKZIP. However, it's not free. It's trial
version is available. It claims to compress on an average 50-70%. So,
if you need to use it only once, you can download its trial version.
There are tens of others such free & commercial softwares available.
However, there is no assurity that any software would always compress
a 100 MB files down to 50MBs. It really depends upon the contents of
the file, how much can they be compressed.
Office 2007 docx files are already compressed. So, they can't be
compressed much more. Similarly, compression ratios for exe & other
binary files are not always outstanding.
However, text files & other such files (like databases) can be highly
compressed.
Be sure to check the Compression Ratio to 'Best' if you are using
WinRar.
Regarding attachment sizes, for gmail its 10-20 MBs, Hotmail &
yahoo... it's 10 MBs. Clearly it varies with your mail service.
If you wish to exchange larger files over Net, you should seriously
consider Rapidshare. Rapidshare allows you to upload files upto 100
MBs & exchange them with anyone.
Also, almost all (including WinZip) Compression softwares allow you to
split larger Zip files into multiple parts each of a specified
maximum. That could also be a good option.
