Hands of Steel was filmed in Arizona with some scenes shot at the Grand Canyon and the town of Arcosanti.[6] Actor Claudio Cassinelli died in Page, Arizona during production as he was on a helicopter that crashed into the Navajo Bridge.[7][8][page needed]

Howard Hughes noted that the film belongs to a group of Italian film productions that borrowed elements from the film The Terminator, including Bruno Mattei's Shocking Dark and Nello Rossati's Alien Terminator.[6] In his overview of 1980s action films, Daniel R. Budnik described the film as "the hybrid movie to end all hybrid movies", noting The Terminator and Blade Runner as influences, as well as the plot later being borrowed for Over the Top.[9]

From retrospective reviews, Hughes described Vendetta dal futuro as "the best example" of a film in debt to The Terminator, noting its other influences of Blade Runner with a karate-fighting android and praising an action sequence featuring lorries, cars and helicopters as well as the score.[6] Budnik found that the film's beginning was boring with its more political elements, but improved after these scenes and that it was "fine, furious desert action with arm wrestling, and some sort of strange cyborg woman thrown in to confuse things." [9] Donald Guarisco of AllMovie described the film as a "decent time-killer for b-movie fans" noting that its "southwestern setting gives it a unique flavor and Sergio Martino (using the pseudonym of "Martin Dolman") does a decent job of delivering plentiful action on a shoestring budget: his best moment might be a scene where the hero has to fend off gun-toting assassins while also fighting a pair of disguised cyborgs in close quarters."[5] Guarisco concluded that "The end results are frequently silly (it takes the police a really long time to figure out they're hunting a cyborg) but never dull" and declared the film to be "strictly for the b-movie audience but they're likely to enjoy its low-budget fun."[5]

Vendata was originally known as Venturion. It is a cyborg created by Jonas Venture, Sr. with the intent of using it to resurrect his deceased friend The Blue Morpho, by transferring his brain with his personality, friends, and memories over to it, which he successfully did. After the original Team Venture expressed their disgust and disapproval of the robot, Jonas relegated it to babysitting Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture and his dog Scamp. One day while it was watching Rusty, Venturion experienced a malfunction that made him flashback to seeing his son Malcolm playing with Rusty and the plane crash that killed him and his wife. He reached out to strangle Rusty thinking he was saving Malcolm. Kano intervened and damaged it beyond repair, saving Rusty. Kano was so distraught at destroying what was left of his old friend, The Blue Morpho, that he took a vow of silence from that moment and never spoke to anyone ever again. Jonas on the other hand, simply threw him away and no longer cared. Venturion's remains were later found by a drunken Dr. Z. Taking him back to his own lab, the villain was shocked to see a human brain in its head. Dr. Z couldn't resist turning Venture's technology against him. Wiping his memory, Dr. Z rebuilt him, giving him new programming, and turning him to evil with a good/evil switch in his head. Z gave him a new name: Vendata.

After Dr. Z was imprisoned on drug charges, Vendata made it to New York where he met Red Death and a small group of villains and convinced them to attack Gargantua-1 setting the stage of Movie Night. While on the space station, Vendata confronted Jonas with the sex tape to blackmail him with. A unconcerned and unafraid Jonas ignores Vendata's threats and walks away. The stations doors opened up to after that moment, sucking Jonas and others into space, killing them. It is unknown and unconfirmed who opened the door, but Vendata is considered the main suspect. Especially since he not only survived, but returned to Earth. He was rewarded by The Guild with a council seat as The Sovereign covered up his actions by blaming S.P.H.I.N.X. for the attack.

Vendata was first shown when he was attending the funeral of fellow Council member, Boggles the Clue Clown. Vendata then went on a date to a night club owned by Don Hell with a disguised Ghost Robot, who at the time was working for the O.S.I. Vendata was later attacked by Brock Samson who stole his armor after he followed him and the disguised Ghost Robot to the bathroom. A severely damaged Vendata managed to return to the night club's main room, but was shifting between his human memories and robot personality before finally shutting down.

In Arrears In Science, it is revealed that Vendata survived the night club incident, and slowly began regaining some of his memories as The Blue Morpho. He began his journey back to his old home at Newark, which took him four months. He arrived at his old home which was now being renovated and inhabited by his son The Monarch and went inside the Morpho cave, gradually remembering more things about his previous life. He realizes that he was The Blue Morpho, and attempts to take his old suit from the center cabinet. He notices the suit is no longer there, but remembers that Enzo made him a larger variant of the suit as his allergic reaction to Killer Drone's attacks had previously caused him to swell enormously.

Returning as The Blue Morpho, Vendata took the Morphomobile and flew to VenTech Tower to see Jonas Venture for assistance with his memory fragmentation. He found the PROBLEM, and immediately understood what happened to Jonas. He used a plug in his finger to connect to the PROBLEM, and met Jonas inside a virtual reality setting of Jonas' old office. Jonas explained how he got from Gargantua-1 back to Earth and then later reminiscent old memories, causing Vendata to realize what a horrible friend Jonas was to him. Vendata, now speaking as Morpho mentions how he hated that Jonas taped their orgy with Jill St. John and Stella Stevens to threaten him with blackmail to make him do his dirty work, and how he took Kano as payment for helping him and his wife conceive a child. It is implied that Jonas may have impregnated Blue Morpho's wife. Jonas noted how he was talking as himself again as he realized it himself. Jonas also believes it was Vendata who pulled the lever on Movie Night at Gargantua-1, murdering the entire crew, including Jonas. Vendata did not believe this as he could not remember it.

Meanwhile, Jonas was also communicating with Rusty and Billy via wifi, and was trying to convince Billy to remove his brain and place it in Vendata's body. Jonas also saw Monarch approaching, and Vendata noticed this. He recognized Monarch as Malcolm, calling him by his name as the latter was shocked. However, Jonas became angry and attached wires around Vendata as he wanted the robot body for himself. The PROBLEM fell, and Vendata accidentally activated his rocket boosters on his legs. Rusty was stuck under Vendata, and Monarch hopped on to question him.

The four then flew to the skies of New York, only to shortly after crash back to the ground. Rusty and Monarch survived by landing on top of a balloon, but Vendata and Jonas crashed. Monarch ran up to him and asked in a hopeful tone "Daddy?" as Vendata weakly smiled at him before he seemingly died, again.

Being a cyborg, Vendata appears to be more machine than man, showing almost no emotions and always being direct and "by the book", even during emotional events such as a funeral and he always speaks in a robotic monotone voice regardless of the situation. Despite having once been human, he appears to have lost interest in "romancing" and socializing with biological beings and now seems to be only interested in robotic beings. He was considered to be a "stick in the mud" or a "killjoy" by his fellow Council members.
