Billupreviously known as Billu Barber, is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language comedy drama film directed by Priyadarshan, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and distributed by Eros International. It stars Irrfan Khan as the titular character alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Lara Dutta in lead roles with an ensemble supporting cast. Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra,[3] and Deepika Padukone[4] make special appearances in songs. The film was released on 13 February 2009 worldwide.
It is a remake of 2007 Malayalam film Katha Parayumpol[5][6] and loosely based on the story of friendship between Krishna and Sudama in the Bhagavata Purana.[7] The film was screened at the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival.[7]
Billu is a poor barber who lives with his wife Bindiya and their two children, Gunja and Ronak in the village of Budbuda. He also spends time with his close friends Budbudiya and Naubat Chacha. Billu lives an uneventful life until Bollywood superstar Sahir Khan comes to the village for a film shoot.
On Sahir's last day in the village, the star speaks at Gunja and Ronak's school function. He tells the children about his own impoverished childhood when he had nothing but a special bond of friendship with another young boy, named Billu. It was Billu who had taken care of Sahir and eventually helped him travel to Mumbai by giving him his gold earring where Sahir became a star. Billu, who is standing at the back of the event, leaves during the talk without revealing to Sahir that he is there. However, the townspeople realizing their fault in ostracizing Billu, take Sahir to Billu's house. Billu's children come home and apologize to their father for the trouble they caused him. All of a sudden, Sahir enters Billu's home, reuniting with his best friend. They hug and embrace each other, with the whole village and Billu's family happily watching. In the end, Sahir must leave for another shoot but promises that his and Billu's friendship is reignited and will remain friends.
Director Priyadarshan cast Shah Rukh Khan and Lara Dutta in pivotal roles in the film. While these roles were initially offered to Akshay Kumar and Tabu, Kumar eventually opted out of the project due to date clashes,[8] as did Tabu.[9] The director then offered Kumar's and Tabu's role to Shah Rukh Khan and Ameesha Patel respectively, and both of them agreed to do the film.[5] Patel also opted out of the film[6] and sources have indicated that Juhi Chawla was signed on for the role.[10]
In April 2008, the director announced that he had cast Lara Dutta as Billu's wife.[11] The cast began filming for the project on 8 April 2008[12] and according to Shahrukh Khan, "the film is a sweet story of friendship...quite similar to the bond shared between Krishna and Sudama".[4] The film also features Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in item numbers with Shah Rukh Khan.[13]
Released on 5 January 2009, the soundtrack for Billu has music by Pritam with lyrics from Gulzar, Neeraj Shridhar, Sayeed Quadri, Ashish Pandit, and Mayur Puri. The song "Khudaya Khair" was recorded by playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya who has rendered his voice for Shahrukh Khan in many movies. However, due to the controversy that was happening between Abhijeet and SRK, the song was withdrawn and was only used as a reprised version. The song "Love Mera Hit Hit" was sampled by Serbian pop singer Anabela in her song "Igra Istine", by Serbian singer Dejan Stanković in his song "Kaligula" and by Macedonian singer Boki 13 in his song "Kaligula".
The film was originally titled Billu Barber, but salon and beauty parlour associations of Bandra raised objections by finding the word "Barber" derogatory.[20] As head of the film's production company, Shah Rukh Khan eventually removed the word from the movie title and promotions,[21] renaming the film Billu. He also invited 'The Hairdressers' Association of Mumbai' members to the premier of the movie in order to assuage their protests.[22]
If The Salon and Beauty Parlors Association has its way, Shah Rukh Khan will have to rename his film Billu Barber to Billu hairdresser. The association has allegedly problem with the word barber as they find it "derogatory and insulting term".
It is to be noted that for promoting the film, SRK has recently tied up with over 500 'barber' shops across Mumbai and has sent them vinyls of the film, and cassettes and CDs of the film to be displayed and played at their shops.
"But I want it to be held on February 9, so that if there's anything objectionable in the film, we can get it changed. If they don't, the association members will take to the streets to protest against the film. There are 27000 association members in Mumbai and 3.5 lakh in Maharashtra." Uday Takke, The President of the association told Mumbai Mirror.
Besides bringing about the proverbial twist in the tale, inspired by Malayalam hit, Kadha Parayumbol, he also provides song and dance relief alongside ladies Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. Billu Barber's actually heroine, however, is Lara Dutta.
So far the trailers, orbiting around its funnily-clad stars in tackily-executed item numbers against gaudy sets, have been far from impressive. Sadly, its jhankaar beats-themed soundtrack is no better.
Even though the originality of his creations has often been a subject of debate, music director Pritam has helmed pretty hummable ditties in the past. What went wrong with Billu Barber? Let's find out:
The lengthy album opens with a Gulzar-penned fast track, Marjaani. Despite the ever reliable Sukhwinder Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan's best attempts to inject their brand of husky exuberance into the pedestrian beats of Marjaani, the song refuses to budge from ordinary. Certainly, if you are constantly exposed to it, like its omnipresent promos are trying to do, you'll involuntarily get used to its presence but that's how far it goes. Its Electro House mix by DJ Sunil and Spinz is on the spunky side. Another remixed version by Kilogram K & G vies for attention with KK and Akriti Kakkar doing the vocal honours. Seriously, that's a lot of Marjaani for one day.
It's unintentional, we presume rather hope. But Hare Krishna Hare Ram crooner Neeraj Sridhar's overdoes the orgasmic uh-uh-uh sounds to disconcerting levels in his bid to capture the come-hither mood of Love mera hit hit. For all its show of zing and rhythm, Hit Hit is far too silly and monotonous to make any connection. In fact, it appears as though it's unintentionally mocking an entire generation of mindless Hinglish music, which is in desperate need of a makeover. Hit, too, is followed up by a couple of racy remixed versions -- DJ Amyth's House mix and another by DJ Chetas and DJ NYK.
Shridhar is perfectly mellifluous in the semi-R&B meets Punjabi cocktail, You get me rockin & feeling. Though vaguely reminiscent of Kismat Konnection's Bakhuda tum, the song fares better thanks to a strong vocal presence, including a charismatic chorus. The Video edit mix is particularly catchy. Ditto for DJ Suketu's retro treatment to the same.
The wannabe tone of the soundtrack returns with a batter, namely Ae Aa O. No amount of dynamism and enthusiasm from KK, Rana Mazumder and Suraj's side can raise this song from mediocrity. DJ Nikhil and Nawed go all-out to work up this limp horse to no avail.
Up next, Pritam calls upon grim-songs-specialist Rahat Fateh Ali Khan to break Billu Barber's until now buoyant tempo to snivel aloud about a loved one gone missing. Khan is efficiency personified but is let down by his composer's trite imagination.
Unlike its scaring off title, Billoo bhayankar is rather amusing. After the ho-hum Marjaani, Gulzar makes a tickling comeback with this comical celebration of Billu, the barber -- Billoo hamaar jaise ustare ki dhaar, jaise saboon ki jhaag, jaise lotion khushboodar. Animatedly rendered by Ajay Jhingaran and Raghuveer, Billu cuts a better picture than most situational numbers of its genre.
Moonlight and stars inspire Gulzar's poetry in Khudaya khair, a breezy creation in sync with Pritam's gooey line of romantic duets. Not bad but not new either. Again, it opens like a thinly-veiled ghost of Bakhuda tum, the music director needs to get over his last year's chartbuster.
