When there is a new incoming message in a Google Hangout multi-person chat that I have joined, neither the Windows taskbar icon for the Hangout chat window nor the Hangouts icon in the Windows notification area / "system tray" flash or otherwise indicate that there has been a new message.
I'm not sure at this point why no notification occurs on incoming messages. Is the OS preventing it? Is there some Hangouts setting that I have inadvertently disabled? Does Hangouts simply not have this functionality?
Beyond this as far as I have been able to determine this is a limitation of the browser based version of hangouts (GMail, Google+, etc.). Each time I tested this implementation the only time I got any noticeable notification was if I already had a chat started and in some way active. New chats and messages sent when Window was not the active window we not present.
However, I did try the same after installing the Google Apps version. Since this version acts like a normal installed messaging client it was able to pop the chat box up and able to generate active system alert sounds.
Until Google finds a better method for the browser based versions of hangouts you may wish to install the apps version by going to the Hangouts homepage and selecting the Computers option for installation.
I wasn't able to do any extensive testing, but the issue of notifications not showing seemed to be resolved in the short term (I tested with a co-worker by having him send me messages with the hangouts window both closed, open, and minimized).
I have tested the new version briefly, but only real, everyday use will tell if the notification issues are resolved. The interface update, and the way it minimizes to a icon button seems decent, and I think I'll end up liking it.
It is really annoying that the mobile phone vibrates on every message arrives on google hangouts after update, how to disable it ? I mean for all messages I just don't need vibration, only sound notification is required.
Google Hangouts have a clickable settings icon. You can use this in conjunction with Audacity and Pulse Audio Volume Control from the repository to check your camera, sound, and speakers.
From the Microphone dropdown select the audio device you will be using. You can test the input of the audio device by running the Pulse Audio Volume Control app. Click on the Input Devices tab. Then speak and notice the visual slider which will indicate the level. You can also use the Audacity app to record from the device so that you can hear how it sounds. Audacity has the same sound device listing that you will see in the Google Hangouts settings menu.
Since the apps you use to check the sound output, also locks the device to that app, you may have to exit out of the other sound apps to avoid conflict. This will also include Google Hangouts. The apps for checking the sound may not work when Google Hangouts is running. Also, Google Hangouts may also have a sound issue if the other apps for checking the sound is running. This will most likely be your system's default.
I'm working on an app that has a feature to make phone or video calls. When you do this with Hangouts or Facebook Messanger app, there is a push notification that gets sent to the recipient. However this notification is a little different in 2 aspects.
Among other things, the updated API now gives developer more control over which guests in On Air hangouts appear during a video broadcast. Google itself uses this feature for its Hangouts On Air Cameraman app. The updated API now also provides developers with more information about a hangout, including the topic, preferred locale and the YouTube ID for the recorded video.
Once the new conversation has been established, a narrow window will pop up on the bottom right side of the browser window. This area is where you can message the person, add them to a Hangout group, or simply start the Video Call by clicking on the video icon. The gear icon opens the options area for archiving or deleting the conversation, blocking the user, getting notifications, and viewing the history.
If your phone is signed into Google (which you'll have been prompted to very prominently when you set it up), you have a Google account and that includes Gmail, Google+ etc. It sounds as though you somehow managed to set Hangouts as your message client at some point. It's not a default and I've never bumped into it myself. Glad you're sorted, though.
