A highlighter, also called a fluorescent pen is a type of writing device used to bring attention to sections of text by marking them with a vivid, translucent colour.[1]A typical highlighter is fluorescent yellow, with the color coming from pyranine.[2] Different compounds, such as rhodamines (Rhodamine 6GD, Rhodamine B) are used for other colours.[3]

A highlighter is a felt-tip marker filled with transparent fluorescent ink instead of black or opaque ink. The first highlighter was invented by Dr. Frank Honn in 1962[4] and produced by Carter's Ink Company, using the trademarked name Hi-Liter. Avery Dennison Corporation now owns the brand, having acquired Carter's in 1975.[5]

Many highlighters come in bright, often fluorescent and vibrant colors. Being fluorescent, highlighter ink glows under black light.[6] The most common color for highlighters is yellow, but they are also found in orange, red, pink, purple, blue, and green varieties. Some yellow highlighters may look greenish in colour to the naked eye. Yellow is the preferred color to use when making a photocopy as it will not produce a shadow on the copy.

Highlighters are available in multiple forms, including some that have a retractable felt tip or an eraser on the end opposite the felt. Other types of highlighters include the trilighter, a triangularly-shaped pen with a different-coloured tip at each corner, and ones that are stackable. There are also some forms of highlighters that have a wax-like quality similar to an oil pastel.

"Dry highlighters" (occasionally called "dry line highlighters") have an applicator that applies a thin strip of highlighter tape (physically similar to audio tape) instead of a felt tip. Unlike standard highlighters, they are easily erasable. They are different from "dry mark highlighters", which are sometimes advertised as being useful for highlighting books with thin pages.

"Liquid Highlighters" in a range of colours are also available, and because they put more ink on a page when highlighting, they make words stand out more than with non-liquid types. Also the fact that more highlighting ink is put on the page with liquid highlighters means that the highlighting ink is much more resistive to fading with age.

Some word processing software can simulate highlighting by using a technique similar to reverse video on some terminals. Some forms of syntax highlighting may also be displayed in the style of a highlighter pen, with a bright or pastel background to the text. Some web browser extensions also enables users to create digital highlights on websites and online PDFs.

I downloaded the latest version of Acrobat Reader and cannot figure out how to permanently change the highlighter color for all future uses. In the version I have on another computer, I can simply right click on the highlighter icon and select the color and transparency I wish to use.

TO change the highlighter color in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (2016 on Mac)1) Select the document's tab2) Double-click on the comment tool in the right pane -- this will open a 'comment' toolbar below the 1st toolbar. (View -> tools -> comment -> open also achieves this.)3) Click on the paint bucket icon, and pick a new colorThat color will be applied to future comments / highlights. Hopefully this is what you mean by "permanently".

I dont know why it s not a favorite when it gives such a glow to the face. I do hope you will replace with another product as good if not better. Otherwise I ll have to look elsewhere. So sad

Fluorescent highlighter markers are so bright because they are literally fluorescent. When used to describe highlighters, the word "fluorescent" is not a vague term that means "extra bright". Rather, this word is an exact, scientific term indicating that the highlighter ink exhibits fluorescence. Fluorescence is the phenomenon where a material absorbs light of a certain color and then emits light of a different color with a longer wavelength. The most striking type of fluorescence involves the absorption of ultraviolet rays (which humans can't see) and the subsequent emission of light in the visible spectrum (which humans can see). Because humans can't see the original ultraviolet light, a fluorescent object looks like it is glowing mysteriously on its own when it is illuminated only by ultraviolet rays in a dark room . For this reason, ultraviolet lights and fluorescent materials can add an intriguing look to darkened rooms at parties and events. Since highlighters contain fluorescent chemicals, the marks made by highlighters will seem to eerily glow on their own when placed in a dark room with an ultraviolet light (e.g. a "black light").

For example, take a normal yellow marker and a yellow highlighter marker which contains a yellow fluorescent chemical mixed into the ink. Draw with both markers on normal white paper. When visible light and ultraviolet light shines on the paper, such as from the sun or from a normal light bulb, the fluorescent marker ink will always be brighter in the visible-light portion of the spectrum than the normal ink. Furthermore, the fluorescent ink is brighter in the visible spectrum than can be accounted for by the original visible light present. For this reason, fluorescent objects under full illumination appear unnaturally bright. The effect of highlighter ink appearing unnaturally bright under normal illumination and the effect of highlighter ink glowing eerily when illuminated by an ultraviolet light in a dark room are the exact same effect: fluorescence. Fluorescent chemicals are also sometimes added to paper, posterboard, paint, and clothing to make them appear unnaturally bright. Fluorescence in this context is often informally called "neon colors" even though fluorescence has nothing to do with the element neon. A shirt that is referred to as "neon green" should more accurately be described as "fluorescent green".
