Hi Matt

Hmm, good question.  It was a number of years ago now.  It was some aptly named website like - electricfences.co.uk (that's not the real address, but it was something like that).  I think we paid around £150 for the generating device and 25m of fence netting.  You will, of course, either need a lead-acid battery or close proximity to a mains socket in order to power it (we use a weather-proofed car battery that is constantly topped up using a solar panel).  I believe there are cheaper units to choose from.  If you want advice or to have a look at a few models, try contacting SPR in Fontwell (they're just beyond Fontwell race course).  We use them to source feed, but I have noticed they stock electric fences (though some are over-powered for chicken use ... it seems that if you have horses, you get a bigger device).

I have to say that the electric fence has made a world of difference, and both chickens are foxes alike are completely non-fussed with seeing each other now - they totally ignore each other.  I guess word must get out not to touch the fence!

Mind you, it does increase the price of a dozen eggs to £50 a box!  Don't, whatever you do, keep chickens on the guise of "free" eggs!  That said, there's nothing like a freshly laid egg...

Thankyou Ian!

That is indeed good advice and I have heard an electric fence does the job....can I ask where did you get yours from?

Thanks

Matt

Hi

I'm afraid I don't have anything to give you, other than a word of advice...

We've been keeping chickens for about 5 years now, and have not found any sort of fox-proof enclosure that allows true "free range" roaming, other than an electric fence.  The foxes near us have successfully broken into closed wooden coops and even burrowed under a wire enclosure.  Maybe we've been unlucky in the past, but thankfully the installation of an electric fence has ended our chicken woes!

Good luck with your hunt for all things chicken-related.

Cheers

Ian

Peace and Love to all.
£50 a box...Is that for 6 plump organic, chard-eating, free-range, Chubz lovin, electric fence protected, Hollingdean-livin chickens?
I will have half a dozen brother.
As long as you can guarantee Lee hasnt touched them!
Here...Where will you ever find £150?
I suppose you could increase Kat's rent.
