A massive benefit of starting to practice calligraphy with a pencil is the fact that you can focus on learning the basic calligraphy strokes and letterforms without trying to figure out how the traditional tools work.
We need a ruler to create calligraphy guidelines. I made a separate video/article on why and how to create calligraphy guidelines. The ruler I always use and constantly recommend is the rolling ruler.
This brush pen calligraphy worksheet is just as effective as the original worksheet pictured above! The difference is in the style in showcases. The calligraphy style featured in this worksheet is a bit more orderly.

Yeeeesh.. This teaches us all that everyone starts somewhere! Seriously though, if you press on and practice you will find that you get quite good quite fast. I hope to motivate some people that may not have learned the art of calligraphy through this post. I intend to get rid of those barriers with this post, offering 3 ways of learning for 3 different kinds of people!
The best paper for blackletter calligraphy is the HP premium 32. If you are using the Pilot Parallel pen, it can bleed on papers that are not as dense (such as regular printer paper). However, if you are learning with pencils, you can obviously use any paper you can find.

Some other things you can make that adds to you blackletter calligraphy would be calligrams! They are a method of arranging your letters or strokes into a layout that represents a visual image. I have a full video demonstrating what they are and how to make them!

The secret of brush calligraphy is learning about the two types of strokes, upward strokes (thin) and downwards strokes (thick), and how to transition between them. And the best way to learn this is by using calligraphy worksheets for beginners regularly.
Most free calligraphy worksheets will have different variations of a series of letters (alphabet worksheets) or strokes (known as drills as well). Usually they will also have the guides you would use to keep your lettering straight and evenly sized and spaced. On every row you start with the example letter or drill, and usually continue with the graphic repeating several times in lighter and lighter grey. I call that shadow exemplars. In some cases, the sample exemplar has arrows indicating the directions of the strokes, or the worksheet may come with a stroke guide separately.
