Rehana Abidi, a fresher in college, lives in the same neighborhood and sews burkhas for her family's store. She steals make-up to wear at college where she takes off the burkha, which she is forced to wear by her family, and transforms into a jeans-wearing singer who loves Miley Cyrus.

Also residing in the same neighborhood is Shireen Aslam, a burkha-wearing house-wife. Shireen is a mother to three boys and secretly works as a door-to-door sales-woman. Her husband, Rahim, is sexually dominating and forbids the use of contraceptives, due to which she gets multiple secret abortions and repeatedly takes emergency contraceptives to prevent more pregnancies. Rahim maintains a cold attitude towards Shireen and uses her only to please his sexual urges, while she yearns for his affection.

On the day of her engagement, during a power outage, Leela has sex with Arshad and films it on her cellphone. Her mother catches her in the act and scolds her for tarnishing their reputation but manages to cover up the situation. It is revealed that Leela's mother makes her living as a nude model for art students. Usha takes the children of her relatives for their swimming lessons, where she is pranked by one of them and almost drowns in the pool. She is rescued by the swimming instructor Jaspal, who calls her by her real name and suggests that she take swimming lessons. Usha begins to fantasize about Jaspal and buys a swimsuit to begin taking lessons from him. She eventually engages in phone sex with him, under the alias of "Rosy", while he is under the impression that Rosy is Komal, a young girl who takes lessons from him. Shireen is told by her doctor that she has an infection in her uterus and that she should only use condoms as a contraceptive. She discreetly buys them in chocolate-flavor from the pharmacy, but her husband Rahim refuses to use them while they are having sex.

Prince Mejel of Currently Globally applauded the movie for its bold content and said, Lipstick under my Burkha is "Not a question to religious fundamentalists but, a slap to the society which we are part of. "[46]

I am not fake, I am not cold, I am just me, under many layers that exist because I care. Yes, I care about what people think about me, I care about being judged, I care about the choices I make, I care about being cool enough, I care about being liked enough.

The reasons given by CBFC for denying a certificate to Lipstick Under My Burkha is as follows, "The story is lady oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contanious sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society, hence film refused under guidelines (sic)."

The CBFC has asked the makers to approach the Revising Committee or the FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) tribunal to get their film cleared. And this is the letter from the CBFC. @LipstickMovie #lipstickundermyburkha pic.twitter.com/zNGc6FT5OU Alankrita (@alankrita601) February 23, 2017

Just ask yourself: if a film is certified 'A', there is no way in hell an underage person can watch Lipstick Under My Burkha in a theatre. Or on the television. If someone who is not an adult still gets to do so, in the theatre or on television or via the internet, it is a problem of parental guidance and not free-thinking filmmakers who have every right to make art in this country.

I think the movie was saying if you have to continue to live under social restrictions (image of an aunt, obedient housewife or daughter, monogamous young girl) you better do it morally, without cheating anyone, otherwise you would be exposed one day. You would be left thoroughly embarrassed. However, if you really want to give expressions to your desires, then have the guts to come out of these restrictions and live the life you dream for yourselves. However, now that you have been shamed publicly and all your Burkhas have been done away with, consider it a blessing in disguise, and choose to follow your passions now. (Khidki ki salaakhein ab Rosie ko rok nahi sakti, Rosie ne baal sawaarein, aansu ponche aur chaukath ke bahar kood padi. Pinjre mein band sapno ki chabi aakhir Rosie ke dil ke andar hi thi.)

Lipstick Under My Burkha explores the life of four Indian women living in small-town India: a burkha-clad college girl, a young beautician, a mother of three and an ageing widow. The film follows these women as they recognise their desires and negotiate their sexuality within the claustrophobia of controlling familial relationships and invasive small-town life.

I argue that there is a lot to the film beyond the discussions and portrayals of sexuality. Be it the young Rehana Abidi who steals from showrooms under her burkha or the old Ushaji who is inspired by the fictional character of Rosie (from an erotic novel called "Lipstick Wale Sapne") and joins a swimming class, there is a reason why these women resort to such extreme ways. The viewer cannot blame the characters for behaving in certain ways which might be construed by some as immoral; they are compelled to because they are victims of the patriarchy that is so firmly engrained in their family, colony and community. Rehana steals expensive apparel and accessories because her parents do not allow her to wear anything but a burkha. Shireen continues to work as a saleswoman despite her husband's objections because she finds it difficult to run the house with his paltry income. Despite being committed to her boyfriend, Leela agrees to marry Manoj because he purchases a house for her mother. Buaji flirts with her young swimming coach over the phone and masturbates because her widowhood has condemned her to desexualisation and solitude.

These women are not wrong; it is their reaction against how they are treated by society. The strong bond among the four protagonists reinforces the need for all women to unite and understand each other's concerns before expecting society to do so. When Buaji feels embarrassed and avoids being caught buying a swimming costume for herself, Shireen is understanding and helps her choose the most suitable one. Further, when Shireen visits Leela's spa, the latter sympathises with her for having a husband who doesn't love her. Towards the end while the swimming coach informs Buaji's family that she had been flirting with him all along, she is thrown out of the house. Shireen, Leela and Rehana take her inside Rehana's house and they all laugh over the erotica Buaji had been reading. None of these women judges the other. They empathise and encourage each other to continue dreaming.

Even in oppressive societies, strong women and men do emerge. If they had not, women would not have reached where they have today. Lipstick under my Burkha, sadly for me as an ageing feminist, took me back a few decades because it did not even hint that such women exist. Instead, the women behaved the way men for millennia have been telling us women behave, without courage and honour. To me that is patronising patriarchy at its worst.
