Duringmy eight years of post-secondary education and my 30+ years working in the corporate world, I know I never had any listening training. I received training on almost every imaginable topic (and some that were unimaginable), but never listening.

Covey discusses the four developmental stages of empathic listening: mimic content, rephrase content, reflect emotion, and, finally, our Reflect approach, where you rephrase content and reflect emotion.


Note that you can Reflect both negative and positive content/emotions. In either case, the goals is for the other person to feel: a) he or she has been heard and understood, and b) you are interested in what he or she is trying to communicate.


Crisis occurs when an individual has an experience that exceeds his or her coping skills and is actively displaying at-risk behaviors (e.g., behaviors that could cause emotional or physical harm to the individual in crisis or to others).


One piece of guidance I often give to guys looking to improve with women is to start doing active listening in order to better listen to women and build great connections with them fast. It's simple, straightforward advice that's easy to start implementing right away -- or at least, that was what I'd been thinking.


Wow man just had a great convo with my mom of all people about how to handle women. We talked a lot about things I already knew but it gave me a fresh perspective. But the one thing she told me about was "paraphrasing what she said"


She told me that a lot of guys like "reiterate" what a woman says. For example if I was talking to a woman and she told me a story about jogging and how it makes her feel great. Reiterating would be me saying "Hmmm so what you're really saying is you feel great because of this...." Then the woman tells me "NO I'm feeling great because of what I just said! Your not listening to me!"


Now that same situation as a paraphrase would go "so let me see if I understand you, your saying you feel great because of this..." then she says "Yes exactly I was feeling great because growing up my mom..."


Now at that point I've got her opening up because she's feeling understoood. And sorry for the vocab lesson I"m sure you already knew this but it helps me illustrate my idea in my mind lol! But I'm just emailing you about this because I've noticed that A LOT of your game is based off of paraphrasing.


Once you can paraphrase her words she feels understood and now you guys can truly connect. And it was something that had been bothering me for YEARS man because I was trying SO HARD to listen to women lol! But I found out that I was just doing it the wrong way which was from a frame of reiteration (male comm) and not paraphrase (female comm).


After reading this email, in a flash, I remembered the years I spent straining and striving to understand women and feed back to them what they'd said, only to have my efforts be tossed right back in my face when girls replied with, "Uh, no, that's not what I meant," or tersely corrected me.

Rhetorical Listening in Action: A Concept-Tactic Approach aims to cultivate writers who can listen across differences in preparation for thinking critically, communicating, and acting across those differences. Krista Ratcliffe and Kyle Jensen offer a rhetorical education centered on rhetorical listening as it inflects other rhetorical concepts, such as agency, rhetorical situation, identification, myth, and rhetorical devices.


Rhetorical Listening in Action spans classical and contemporary rhetoric, reading key concepts through rhetorical listening and supported by scholarship in rhetoric and composition, feminist studies, critical race studies, and intersectionality theory. The book expands on how we think about and negotiate difference and the factors that mediate social relations and competing cultural logics. Along the way, Ratcliffe and Jensen associate creative and heuristic tactics with clearly defined concepts to give all writers methods for listening rhetorically to and understanding alternative viewpoints.


Krista Ratcliffe is Foundation Professor and Chair in the Department of English at Arizona State University. She earned her doctorate from The Ohio State University (1988) and has been a professor and chair of English at Marquette University and Purdue University. Her research focuses on intersections of rhetoric, feminist theory, and critical race studies. Her books include: Anglo-American Challenges to the Rhetorical Traditions: Virginia Woolf, Mary Daly, and Adrienne Rich (1996); Who's Having This Baby? (2002); Rhetorical Listening: Identification, Gender, Whiteness (2006), which won the 2006 JAC Gary Olson Award, the 2007 CCCC Outstanding Book Award, and the 2007 Rhetoric Society of America Book Award; Performing Feminist Administration in Rhetoric and Composition Studies (2010) co-edited with Rebecca Rickly; Silence and Listening as Rhetorical Arts (2011) co-edited with Cheryl Glenn; and Rhetorics of Whiteness: Postracial Hauntings in Popular Culture, Social Media, and Education (2017) co-edited with Tammy Kennedy and Joyce Middleton, which won a 2018 CCCC Outstanding Edited Book Award. Her work has also appeared in edited collections and academic journals, such as CCC, JAC, Rhetoric Review, College English, and Rhetoric Society Quarterly. Her national service has included serving as president of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA) and the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition (CFSHRC). She is also a Fellow of the Rhetoric Society of America.
