Recently I had the opportunity to convert Creative Memories scrapbooks into digital photobooks and the five key things I learned I would like to share with you to help you get started: (If you already know this information skip to my followup post on converting scrapbooks into digital photos books part 2)

1) Scanning the pages. You will need a scanner that has a bed that is at least 1/8th of an inch larger than the size of the page to ensure that nothing gets cut-off. I considered photographing the pages however the source of light provided by a camera in the time-frame you will be photographing will change and result in pages with different lighting.

5) Preserve. Once you have received your books back from the printer you will be IN LOVE with the outcome. You will be happy to send off the original creative memories scrapbooks with your kids and display your new versions. Be sure however, to preserve your original edited scans on a thumb drive. Why? If anything happens to the hard-copy books you can easily access the images and recreate. In addition, if you want to access any one individual photo on one of the pages you can do that too. Make sure to scan the original pages at a minimum of 600 DPI so that the individual images offer a good reproduction quality.

Darla,
Thank you for your comment. You are correct about the ongoing preservation of the physical photos. Even if you do not convert into digital books you should still scan the scrapbook pages to preserve the photos and the memories.

I made a completely digital scrapbook for my son in 2003. Working with the limited programs at the time, manipulating pictures with the help of Ulead Photo Impact 3 and adding clipart and digitally scanned images to pages in Microsoft Word 97. Capturing my sons elementary school years digitally was a blast but a huge project consisting of 267 pages in total. I often wondered if it was a first of its kind.

Hi Debbie,
If you want to scan the scrapbook pages here is the company that provides the scanner that you need: EZ photo scan. If you decided to purchase you would need a PS80 and the A3 flatbed. The A3 flatbed only works as an add-on item (hence the purchase of the PS80). You will need to indicate the DPI using the settings via the scanner software. You will need to adjust the bleed in a editing software, Adobe Photoshop Elements is an easier one to learn. Let me know if that helps!

I have used the high resolution scanner at our public library. Just have the librarian check your flash drivers make sure you have all your scans before you delete from the scanner. Our library also has an amazing scanner to scan delicate scrapbooks that wails be damaged by flipping face down on a regular scanner. The historical librarian is extremely helpful.

When I looked at the loose pieces that I punched with the Ice Cream Build-A-Punch, I saw gnomes! The soft serve dip is a perfect beard, the ice cream dip is a face with ears; the cone is a hat; and the cherry makes a nose! Think of the darling possibilities!

For my June Monthly Technique Layout and Challenge, I shared a technique for punching paper corners with either Border Punches or the Original Border Maker System to create fancy patterns. This technique will work with edge or knockout style Border Punches and Border Maker Cartridges. For my first layout, I used the edge style Floral Peaks Border Punch with papers, embellishments and stickers from the Tropic Time Collection.

For my second layout, I used the Hand Tools Border Punch and also the Original Border Maker System with the Tire Tracks Border Maker Cartridge with paper, stickers and embellishments from the Revved Up Collection. The knockout style of this punch and cartridge creates a different type of pattern than the edge style punches and cartridges. I love the versatility of this technique and the different looks that you can punch!

I used the Original Border Maker System from Creative Memories to punch a portion of the top sheet of designer paper and then reassembled the sheet with the borders. For my first layout, I alternated the Brocade Chain and the Wispy Chain Border Maker Cartridges and used paper, stickers, embellishments and a variety mat from the Something Blue Collection.

For my second layout, I used the new Bears Chain Border Maker Cartridge with papers and embellishments from the Welcome Baby Collection. I also added flowers and leaves from the Floral Essential Yellow and Teal Embellishments (a recent promotion offering). I love how we can easily mix and match across many of the collections by Creative Memories!

I used the Welcome Gnome Border Punch in two unexpected ways for my layouts today. I used my Micro-Tip Scissors to cut apart border pieces to get individual hats. For my first layout, added the hats to owls that I created with the Owl Build-A-Punch. Unfortunately, the Owl Build-A-Punch is sold out with Creative Memories. I also used the Original Border Maker System with the Treeline Border Maker Cartridge, Christmas Cheer Paper, Christmas Cheer Stickers and Christmas Cheer Variety Mats for the layout above.

My second layout includes another unexpected way to use the Welcome Gnome Border Punch. I cut the hats off a gnome border and took the beard pieces that are punch debris and reassembled the beards and hats to give the suggestion of Santa Claus. Again, I used paper, stickers and variety mat from the Christmas Cheer Collection.

I also love to share different ways to use Creative Memories punches and border maker cartridges! For these borders, I used small, punched pieces to peek through the openings of my borders. You can use three pieces from one punch or cartridge or mix and match using two or three as I did.

For the layout above, I used paper and a few stickers from the Leave Nothing Behind Collection, Hot Fudge Cardstock and Brown Serif ABC/123 Letter Stickers. I also used the NEW White Memories Tabs as spaces to journal. My border includes pieces punched with the Polar Bear, Friendly Fish and Cardinals Border Punches and strips cut with the 12-Inch Trimmer with Wave Blade. These are all current items that are available through my Creative Memories website link.

For my second layout, I used paper, stickers and letter stickers from the current Tropic Time Collection with White Cardstock. I also used pieces punched with the retired Palm Tree Border Punch and the Original Border Maker System with the NEW Dolphin Border Maker Cartridge.

You can use this technique with many other border punches and border maker cartridges. Below are just a few additional ideas for you.

For my first layout, I used the Tropic Time Collection to preserve memories from a Florida vacation. I also used the Monstera Leaves Border Punch and the Original Border Maker System with the Ancient Key Border Maker Cartridge.

I used the same technique to create a second layout with some photos of hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I used the Set Up Camp Collection and the Chevron Arrows Border Maker Cartridge for this page.

This technique will work with any knock-out style border maker cartridge. Please see my video for instructions. I would also appreciate your subscription to my YouTube channel! If you click on the bell icon, you will receive a notification whenever I add a new video.

You may purchase all of the tools and materials that I used for these layouts through my Creative Memories website link. I appreciate your purchases and offer a generous Customer Rewards Program!

To celebrate, Creative Memories releases a special National Scrapbook Day Kit each year. In addition to the NSD Kit, CM usually offers accompanying cardstock, embellishments, and tools. Some of our 2023 items are sold out, but the kit and a few other items are still available for purchase.

To create my layout above, I used materials from the 2023 NSD Kit with the Citrus Slice Border Maker Cartridge and Mandala Burst Border Punch. I appreciate your purchases through my Creative Memories website link, and I offer a generous Customer Rewards Program.

You will receive access to handouts and instructional videos to create 8 single page layouts. The layouts pair perfectly to create double-page layouts if desired. After you purchase, you will receive an email within 24 hours with instructions for accessing the materials. I ask that these layouts are not shared with others and are not shared on social media including Pinterest. No refunds.

To create my layout, I used the Custom Cutting System to cut three different sizes of circles, and then I cut those circles in half. I used the Original Border Maker System with the Zebra Stripe Border Maker Cartridge to punch around the edges of the smallest semi-circles.

For this layout, I used the super cute What a Zoo Too! Collection. The What a Zoo Too! Stickers are especially adorable, and I also love the coordinating What a Zoo Too! ABC Letter Stickers!

For my second layout, I used the lovely Painted Garden Collection with the retired Butterflies Border Maker Cartridge and the exclusive Ladybugs Punch that was part of a recent promotion by Creative Memories. I added a journaling box to this layout and also a border punched with the Original Border Maker System with exclusive Woven Scallop Border Maker Cartridge. (Please contact me if you would like to purchase the Woven Scallop BMC.)
