Aminimum of 130 hours of credit is required for graduation. This curriculum prepares its graduates for teaching music in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. For teacher education requirements applicable to all curricula, see the Council on Teacher Education. Students complete a concentration in instrumental (band or strings), choral, technology, or general music education.

In order to be recommended for licensure, candidates are required to maintain a UIUC cumulative grade-point average of 2.5, content area (music courses) GPA of 2.75, and professional education course GPA of 3.0 (A=4.0). Candidates should consult the music education handbook, their advisor, or the Council on Teacher Education for a listing of courses used to compute these grade-point averages.


Sample Sequence

This sample sequence is intended to be used only as a guide for degree completion. All students should work individually with their academic advisors to decide the actual course selection and sequence that works best for them based on their academic preparation and goals. Enrichment programming such as study abroad, minors, internships, and so on may impact the structure of this four-year plan. Course availability is not guaranteed during the semester indicated in the sample sequence. This sample curriculum plan makes the assumption that students will have demonstrated keyboard competency by proficiency examination when they matriculate or they will need to enroll in MUS 172 and/or MUS 173.


Students must fulfill their Language Other Than English requirement by successfully completing a third level of a language other than English. This sample curriculum plan makes the assumption that the foreign language graduation requirement has been satisfied by completing three years of study of a single foreign language in high school. MU 502: Methods of Teaching Music Teaching music in the elementary school environment. Investigation of critical elements in the teaching and learning process as related to music in grades N-6. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor. 3 hours.


Examines the history and contemporary philosophy of music education in the public schools. Curriculum development, conceptual teaching, basic bibliographic and research techniques, and evaluation of the music program, with an emphasis on psychology of music as applied to contemporary music instruction in public schools will be examined in detail. 3 hours


An overview of exceptionality as it pertains to children and adults. Both high and low incidence populations will be examined. Each area of exceptionality will be reviewed in terms of etiology, diagnosis, prevalence, remediation, and educational strategies. 3 hours.


Formal introduction to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). Using writing and discussion, the class provides a clear and realistic understanding of issues involved in choosing education as a career. Writing is a significant component of this course (QEP). 3 hours.


Application of principles of reading process to content-area materials and instruction. Designed for elementary, middle, and high school pre-service teachers. Extensive field experience required. Admission to TEP required.3 hours.


Aims, principles, and philosophies of music; various methods of teaching in secondary schools for both non-performance music classes and instrumental and vocal activities. Laboratory includes direct method application in secondary music classrooms. 3 hours.


Capstone course. Students will demonstrate the skills expected of a professional music educator. This course is a supervised teaching course where the student is expected solve problems in all issues related to classroom management, assessment, and music making. Included in the assessment will be the creation of professional documents, appropriate budgets, and supervised teaching experiences. 3 hours.


Basic concepts and principles of measurement and evaluation of personal and academic progress in classroom. Elementary descriptive statistics and measurement techniques used in student evaluation. Quantitative literacy is a significant component of this course (QEP). 3 hours


Students seeking Alabama teacher certification in choral or instrumental music should select the following courses AND the courses listed under either the choral or instrumental emphasis track below. Additionally, music education students should select education as a second major. Students should consult with their advisors concerning all certification requirements.*


All BM Education majors are expected to fulfill the Aural Skills, Theory, and Keyboard requirement. Students may be exempted from one of the technique classes upon satisfactory demonstration of teaching proficiency as determined by the instructor of the course.


A minimum of seven semesters of specified study to equal fourteen hours in applied music is required as are periodic jury and proficiency examinations. A half-recital must be given in the final semester of study. Keyboard majors selecting the Instrumental Emphasis will study a secondary instrument for 4 consecutive semesters for 1 credit hour each semester.


Students are required to participate in a major ensemble involving their primary instrument concurrent with every semester of applied music study. Major ensembles include Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, University Orchestra, Concert Choir, Vox Lumina, Una Voce. Some performance areas have more specific requirements. Students should consult their advisors and applied lesson teachers for detailed requirements.

The program in Music Education prepares students to become professional Music Educators. Entering students have auditions to determine placement in appropriate applied music classes. Students choose as their principal instrument: voice, piano, harp, guitar, organ or a band or orchestral instrument. Students must complete a teaching internship. Students choose a program in Choral, Instrumental, or General Music Education. Upon completion of this program, students receive the Bachelor of Music Education (B.M. E.) degree and qualify for Florida Teacher Certification in Music Education K-12.


Remarks


1. A minimum of 45 hours at the 3000 level or above, 30 of which must be taken at this University.

2. Half of the major course semester hours must be completed in residence at this University.

3. The final 30 hours must be completed in residence at this University.


The music curriculum prepares students to become proficient musicians, music educators, and capable instrumentalists who are able to demonstrate the performance skills and knowledge for sound musicianship. The music education degree prepares a student for a teaching career in the public school systems.


To major in music, students must pass an audition in the principal performance area and take a music aptitude examination. Based on the audition and examination, MUS 105, 108, 118 may be required. These courses do not count toward degree requirements. If a student fails MUS 108 or MUS 118 twice, the student shall be ineligible to continue in a music program.


All music majors must pass a public recital in the last semester of principal applied lessons before a degree will be granted. Courses used to meet the large ensemble requirement must reflect the applied study area; only one will count per semester. For students in the BM program, marching band is required only in the Instrumental Music Education Concentration.


Students receiving the BM degree in Music with a concentration in Choral/General or Instrumental Music Education will also receive the BSEd degree in Music Education from the College of Education and Allied Professions. Both the Choral/General and the Instrumental concentrations require completion of the Professional Education Sequence.


During the sophomore year, Music Education students must apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program and are subject to all of the teacher education requirements. EDCI 201 and SPED 240 are the only courses in the professional education sequence that may be taken before admission to teacher education.


All wind and percussion majors in the Instrumental Music concentration must include a minimum of three semesters in a concert band and two semesters in marching band. For keyboard, strings, and guitar majors, band must be the major ensemble; performance on secondary winds or percussion is required.
