Thereviews of programs recommended by the State Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission for inclusion on the Official List of Textbooks and Instructional Materials were prepared by committees of classroom teachers and other experts (state advisory panels) and approved by the commission. The reviews are conducted for the twofold purpose of assisting the commission in formulating the official list and of assisting local adoption committees in selecting the textbook programs which best meet their local needs.
The Section C Reviews file will direct you to the Section C Advisory Panelists' Reviews for all textbooks and instructional resources which were submitted and reviewed. It does not include textbooks and Instructional Resources which were either not bid or were withdrawn after failing to meet all of the required components of section 1 of the screening instrument.
The academic standards approved by the State Board of Education and the textbook and instructional materials screening instrument approved by the commission comprise the basis for these reviews. The review by the state advisory panelists shall include an examination as to whether the textbooks or instructional materials:
The long-standing philosophy of the State Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission has been to provide local school systems with a broad range of flexibility by including all suitable books on the official list. The information provided from the review process is, therefore, intended to assist local adoption committees, not to replace them.
These programs were reviewed by Tennessee teachers using Tennessee standards and considering the needs of Tennessee classrooms. We make no claims regarding the suitability of any of these programs for classrooms outside Tennessee.

Instead, Metro administrators have asked teachers to use websites, interactive videos and primary resources as the main way to teach history, geography and other social studies topics. Though older textbooks will still be in classrooms, and teachers can use them as resources, they are no longer the central focus.
As Tennessee shifted to higher academic standards in social studies this year, some other Tennessee school districts, including Sumner County, Tullahoma and Memphis-Shelby County, also have opted not to buy new social studies textbooks. In contrast, school districts in Rutherford and Williamson counties went ahead with buying new books.
Textbook omissions have raised eyebrows. Some wonder whether kids who lack the Internet at home will be at a disadvantage. Though the district acknowledged many students lack computers at home, MNPS officials say materials can be printed off for them to study away from school.
The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) colleges and universities have joined together in offering TN eCampus. Courses completed in TN eCampus are entirely online and are completely transferable among all the participating TBR institutions. Roane State students who take TN eCampus courses receive credit at Roane State Community College. The only difference between a Roane State course and a TN eCampus course is that it may be taught by an instructor from another TBR institution. There is also an additional fee that is applied for TN eCampus courses.
Books for TN eCampus courses may be purchased from bookstore located on the TN eCampus homepage. The RSCC campus bookstore DOES NOT have textbooks for TN eCampus courses. Books are usually different for TN eCampus courses than for traditional, on-campus courses. You may purchase books by credit card, check, or money order.
Yes, TN eCampus can also be charged against your excess Financial Aid. Complete the TN eCampus Book Voucher Form available at the Bursar's Office Website. The voucher must be filled out completely, meaning all book information (shipping method and shipping address, new or used, etc).
No, you are not required to buy your books from the virtual bookstore. The site lists ISBN numbers so you may purchase your texts elsewhere. Please note that this is at your own risk and TN eCampus cannot assist you with textbook errors / returns unless the purchase is through the TN eCampus virtual bookstore.
All RSCC students may enroll in courses offered via TN eCampus delivery. There is an additional charge for each credit hour. Please check the TN eCampus website for the exact amount. For enrollment in an accelerated (R01, R25, & R35 section numbers) Tn eCampus Course or into a Tn eCampus Learning Support course (R80), please contact Matthew Ward.
In TN eCampus courses, you pay for every credit hour. For example, if you have 12 credit hours of courses and add a 3 hour TN eCampus course, you will be charged for 15 credit hours at the standard RSCC fee rate plus the TN eCampus per credit hour fee for 3 hours.
While the vast majority of Tn eCampus courses do not, some Tn eCampus courses required proctored examinations. If your course requires a proctored examination, it will be stated in the course's syllabus. Tn eCampus has two options for proctoring:
Volunteer State Community College seeks to address the student success barrier and equity issues caused by continuously increasing textbook costs. No provision in this policy shall have the effect of diminishing the academic freedom faculty possess in selecting materials for their courses.
(1) Each appointed textbook selection committee will research cost-effective alternative delivery formats for selected materials, including but not limited to digital formats available to students at reduced cost, where appropriate. Notification of any selected alternative formats should be included in course syllabi or other relevant course documents distributed to students.
(2) When considered feasible and potentially beneficial to students, and when no infringement upon academic freedom is perceived, textbook selection committees will weigh custom publishing options and Open Educational Resources (OER) against standard selections. Such options may dramatically reduce publishing costs, effectively offering aggregate cost savings to students.
(3) Upon final selection of materials, each department chair will submit a list of adoptions to the campus bookstore. Adoption deadlines set forth by the bookstore must be stringently met in order to facilitate cost reporting.
(1) Within a twenty-one (21) day period following each deadline for submission of adoptions, the campus bookstore will provide each department chair with a comprehensive, itemized cost report on a per-course basis, explicitly stating student costs for all required materials.
(2) Department chairs will forward cost information to teaching faculty, who will affirmatively acknowledge materials costs before the final placement of a materials order. Final orders should be submitted within fourteen (14) days of receipt of cost reports.
(3) Upon completion of final bookstore orders, the campus bookstore will provide a public, per-course report of required student materials and associated costs on its Web site. This report will be prominently referenced on Volunteer State's home Web page. The minimum required information should include each textbook's author(s), edition, publisher, publication date, and International Standard Book Number (ISBN). Students must be granted access to this information before courses begin each semester.
(1) The campus bookstore will offer students the option of renting most or all of their required textbooks. Students will continue to be allowed to purchase texts at new or used prices if the textbook rental does not satisfy their needs.
(2) Textbooks considered by the campus bookstore as eligible for student rental will be available on a semester basis at the fixed rate of 55% of the shelf sale price. Most titles and editions will be considered eligible for rental.
(3) Rentable textbooks will be prominently displayed in the campus bookstore. Students will also be given the option to buy or rent their required textbooks, when eligible, upon transaction at bookstore cash registers.
(4) Under certain, limited conditions, textbook rental may not provide the individual student with cost savings. As an example, textbooks which will be used throughout a multi-semester course sequence may be best suited for purchase. Faculty and bookstore staff should notify students of these possibilities as they arise.
(5) The textbook rental initiative is designed to provide aggregate cost savings on student purchases of textbooks. It is understood that this initiative will not achieve the goal of providing each individual student with savings on materials costs every semester.
(1) When possible, at least one copy of each adopted text should be made available for onsite student use in the campus library. Such materials should be made available through this channel only when materials have been provided by the publisher, at no additional charge to the institution or its students.
