I need a quick and elegant solution, too, as I'll need to process huge chat files with thousands of messages.So, of course, I could loop through and merge lines based on whether they have date/time/username stamps, but that takes a whole lot of time on a big file.
As WhatsApp states: every time a user installs or updates the app, a new key pair would be generated on the user's device. So I assume that the chat history on iCloud which was encrypted by the old public key should not be decrypted and readable.
So, how is this achieved by WhatsApp? The private key never goes on the network, and was not even stored on the user's device anymore after updating the app or changing to a new device. How does the chat history recovery work then?
That indeed allows you to recover your chat history in your new phone without any access to the old key. But that also mean that it is easier to steal WhatsApp exchange that end to end encryption should allow. And it also means that WhatsApp can actually give the full history to legal authorities if they were asked to, simply by simulating a new device...
Thanks for your response, the cloud backup option only works when staying on the same platform and is not supported when switching from Apple to Android as Android cannot access iCloud where the Whatsapp backup is stored.
I followed the official guide stated in this thread, the qr does appear and data transfers seems succesful up to the point where I should open WhatsApp and load the history by logging in with my phone number. It loads groups but the threads are empty.
The only thing that pops to mind are small interruptions during the process that causes whatsapp to close during the whole transfer. I once had whatsapp run into the maximum time limit that I had set earlier. Also definitely make sure your Iphone screen stays on all the time (turn off the option that locks the screen at inactivity)
Make sure your wifi is stable, that sort of things. I did a backup of all chats in txt format as well.

I am trying to recover chats from WhatsApp on Mac, due to a problem with my iCloud backup. I have Time Machine backups and I am trying to find where WhatsApp stores my chats in my Library. I have looked at a previous question (Deleting WhatsApp chat history from work Mac), but this was before WhatsApp no longer required a continuous internet connection.
By default, your WhatsApp data inside the Time Machine backup is located in /Library/Containers/com.whatsapp/Data/Library/Application Support/WhatsApp. In this folder, you should see a file called ChatStorage.sqlite, that's the file containing your chat history. You can restore it (copy it), and from there, you could open it using a SQLite database viewer or import it to WhatsApp.
It turns out that the although the phone does not be connected to the internet, the desktop app must always have an internet connection. It appears that the chats are not saved locally on the computer, as answered to in the original question Deleting WhatsApp chat history from work Mac.

Am facing the same issue now. Have you got any solution? The chats in my old handset are still there till date, which I can view as long as I keep that handset offline. If the internet is switched on, then I can view the messages there if I activate the whatsapp once again on that handset. To view the latest messages, I have to come back to my new handset & activate it. How do I merge these chats for two different periods?
Remember that saving the file on your new phone and restoring the chat will delete any new Whatsapp chat you started on the new phone. You can continue chatting and start new chats in the restored file. Or say goodbye to Whatsapp ?

Hello, I would like to recover old deleted chats in whatsapp. I have my android phone set to back up automatically every week. I have read that the last back up overrides the last one. Is that mean that I can only recuperate the chats from the last week or I can also get the ones I have been erasing for almost a year? Can you please help?
I forgot to make a Whatsapp Backup on Google Drive before I switched phones. I already activated Whatsapp on the new phone. Can I still put my sim card in the old phone, make a backup in Google Drive and then reinstall Whatsapp on the new phone? Will I then be prompted to restore the backup?
Good day. I was chatting on Whatsapp with my phone and laptop at the same time (due to file I want to upload). On my phone it just went Initializing,when it finished I just saw that my 5years messages and documents have bee cleared. My backup is weekly. I went to my settings to Uninstall and Install again from place store and it brought RESTORE and I clicked it but it only restore the particular day message.
I was robbed my phone sometimes last evening today upon replacing the smartphone and sim card , whatsapp had a backup 405mb i was driving to work and restoeing the same along the highway,after an hour the network was an issue and whatsapp restored very few (only group chats) how comes when i try retrieving in backup it prompts me back up instead of restore. only 30% of my whatsapp data was backup. i installed new whatsapp in new phone and enter my number their. only 30% is showing chats. how can i restore all my data from old phone. that i can restore it to new phone. Please guide
However today when I opened the WhatsApp app I suddenly got a message which said something like Your chat history stopped working. You can restore your data by clicking on Restore . I chose Restore but it actually only restored empty group discussions, without any messages inside, and no discussion were restored. Then, in the WhatsApp settings I checked my backup settings and saw there was a Google Drive backup dated of January (which corresponds to the moment I originally transferred my data from my old Windows Phone) and a local backup from February (which contains important new messages arrived in the meantime).
I precise that in my internal phone storage I kept a folder WhatsApp inside which I have 3 visible folders: Backups, Databases, and Media. There are also 4 hidden folders: .Shared, .StickerThumbs, .Thumbs, and .trash.
Inside Backups there are 4 files: chatsettingsbackup.db.crypt1, statusranking.db.crypt1, stickers.db.crypt1, and wallpaper.bkup.
Inside Databases there is 1 file: msgstore.db.crypt12 (which I believe is the main backup file to recover my messages).
Inside Media there are 10 folders : .Status, WallPaper, WhatsApp Animated Gifs, WhatsApp Audio, WhatsApp Documents, WhatsApp Images (this folder contains all my pictures sent and received), WhatsApp Profile Photos, WhatsApp Stickers, WhatsApp Video, and WhatsApp Voice Notes.

So i dont have access to my old sim. I moved my database and backup folder in internal storage to a new folder.
So now if i activate my whatsapp with a new number and i move the old database and backup folder and replace it with the new ones in internal storage whatsapp
Will i get my old chats back?
1) Backup ./WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt12
2) backup /WhatsApp/Media folder
3) Install whatsapp on new phone
4) Copy backup to new phone in ./WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt12
5) Copy Media folder to ./WhatsApp/Media
6) login to whatsapp
Aside:
- Whatsapp was one app which was mentioned wouldn't move during the Smart Switch (others didn't and was no mention)
- Did the whatsapp Local Backup Manually before doing the switch and having it running daily. The Whatsapp local backup; just makes a copy of the current msgstore.db.crypt12with a date added wihtin the file name
- I did sucessully migrate Whatsapp successfully 2 years ago when I moved from a Pixel2 to S10+ (steps don't apply this time though)

Now, when I get the to part where WhatsApp asks to give permission to restore from the Drive backup, it asks me to login again to Google but since this is already done it just says that that account is already added. Backing out at this point only allows me to skip the backup, leading to empty chat history.
