The 10th Linguistic and Cognitive Approaches to Dialogue Agents (LaCATODA’26) workshop aims to bridge the persistent gap between current “chatbots” and truly natural, human-like conversational AI. While Generative AI has demonstrated remarkable fluency, significant challenges remain in achieving genuine dialogue understanding, nuanced interaction, and cognitive grounding. This workshop will discuss the multidisciplinary issues crucial for developing sophisticated dialogue agents that move beyond mere information exchange to truly engage with human users. By exploring the intricate interplay of linguistics, cognitive science, and computational approaches, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of human communication. The workshop is specifically designed to address the critical new challenges and opportunities presented by the rapid evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) in dialogue systems. Although LLMs have dramatically advanced the fluency and coherence of machine-ge
nerated text, their inherent limitations in achieving true human-level conversational intelligence have become increasingly apparent in 2025. Our goal is to push the boundaries beyond probabilistic text generation and target the specific issues that underpin genuinely natural, intelligent, and human-centric dialogue.
