Apparently there have been rumours of some kind of commercial takeover of the DIALANG project. This has not happened and will not happen. In fact, I don't think it can happen, legally.
Dialang is still being run by Lancaster University in the UK. There will always be a free version of Dialang available, where students can take tests anonymously and assess their own language proficiency - Dialang was funded primarily under the Socrates LINGUA funding stream of the European Commission and the free version is set in stone.
What we’re trying to do, at Lancaster, is work out some mechanism whereby we can fund further development of the free system, and one of the ways we are trying to do that is by selling a reporting tool so that tutors can run testing sessions and see the scores that their students achieved. This we are trying to do via integration with systems like Moodle and Sakai. This reporting framework is an addon to the free system - it is not a 'better' version of Dialang or anything like that. The free system, the one where students self assess, is still the core 'product' and will continue to improve as long as my employer, Lancaster University, kindly supports my work on it. Bringing in a bit of money to help pay towards that can only help.
So, fear not, Dialang is alive and well.
Cheers,
Adrian.
