Render encoded diagram into a Bytestring

Hello everyone!

I would like to render a diagram into a bytestring, in one of supported formats (.png perhaps), and handle this binary data myself (not have it written to a file). Can somebody give a a pointer, or example, please? Functions that I could find either render to a 2d array of pixels, or encode and write into a named file.

The ultimate goal is to have frames rendered in real time video-streamed, perhaps using ffmpeg's pipe mode
