Steve cuts a fine figure in a tuxedo and entertains the ladies sitting next to him with that most delightful of conversational skills: asking questions. It is rumored that he was a back row boy in law school and possibly had a lot of fun in college. Steve is, among other things, a partner at his law firm, an art collector, and the planner of brilliant family vacations abroad. His wife Carolyn is a front row girl, an earnest student from elementary school right on through. She practiced law for a number of years before staying home with their two daughters, a rising junior and 7th grader at Harpeth Hall. Carolyn has just wrapped up a year serving as President of the Harpeth Hall Parent Association, a year in which the school celebrated its 150th anniversary. By all reports Carolyn provided exceptional leadership with her patience and quiet grace. She will laughingly admit that it was a busy year, and she loved being part of a wonderful team effort with other parents and administrators.

Steve: I grew up in a small town, and we were out from dawn to dusk playing tennis and golf, swimming, water skiing, and shooting hoops. It was non-stop fun all summer long. No World Wide Web, no cell phones, no cable, no worries.

John weaves through the walls of people waiting for merchandise and snacks. Fans, seeing his Kettering Health logo, stop him to ask where their seats are. Recalling his mental map, John points them in the right direction without slowing his search for the girl.

Back in the Plaza, the hands of the nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and doctors never stop moving. The team is a well-oiled machine, simultaneously gathering patient information, checking pulses, and cracking cold packs.

Music from the opening act floods the station each time a roaming team wheels someone in. Fans are eager to find their seats before Swift takes the stage, but the heat proves to be more powerful than their adoration for the singer.

For most, the night is over. But the first aid team gears up for another wave of patients. The roaming teams bring in people having panic attacks. The long hours in the sun catch up to some and vomit bags are distributed throughout the Plaza. A woman is brought in after she tripped and skinned her right shin. A nurse peels away dead skin as the patient averts her eyes, wincing as the nurse sterilizes the area.

A beautiful summer evening with Julia and Taylor along the Hudson River! In the week leading up to their session, there was significant rain in the forecast. In fact, the morning-of it absolutely poured! Thankfully the skies cleared and gave us an absolutely perfect night for engagement photos.

These two moved to Sleepy Hollow, NY in September of 2022. Julia grew up in Scarsdale, NY and Taylor grew up in Cortlandt Manor, NY, so they knew we wanted to move to Westchester County to be closer to their families when they decided it was time to leave Manhattan.

This Mango Lemonade Chopped Salad Kit captures the essence of a bright summer day. We combined fresh, crisp romaine lettuce, radicchio, crunchy sliced almonds, sweetened crouton crumbles, and dried mango pieces, all topped off with a fruity mango lemonade vinaigrette to give it that extra burst of brightness.

Despite growing up only 20 miles from each other and attending West Virginia University at the same time, Michelle Cofer and Nathan Taylor did not officially meet until one summer night while they were bowling. Because of their obvious chemistry, when they met again a year later, Nathan made sure that they exchanged numbers, and they have been together ever since. Since their relationship was built on trust and honesty, the open channels of communication would make it hard for a wedding proposal to be a surprise, or so Michelle thought. But when Michelle was helping Nathan unpack the groceries after Nathan ran out to grab items to make breakfast one morning, she was surprised to find a little silver box in the bottom of one of the bags. In the box was her dream ring, and Nathan got down on one knee and asked Michelle to be his wife.

Michelle cherishes the memory of seeing her husband's face as she walked down the aisle. She felt no nerves and no worries, just a calmness in knowing that she was walking toward her best friend and future. "It was breathtaking," Michelle says. The ceremony, dubbed the "Marilyn Monroe Wedding" due to its classic details, had a color scheme of black, white and grey with red roses as accents. These roses are very meaningful to the couple: since their relationship was long distance for over a year, every time Nathan visited Michelle, he would bring her a dozen roses. The elegant outdoor ceremony was unique due to the stunning arrangements, and the reception was magical, thanks to tables lined with candles and rose centerpieces. The perfect day was made even more special because many of the guests came from all over the country to help Michelle and Nathan celebrate the joyous occasion.

Due to the pandemic, the backcountry camping reservation process changed for 2021. I could only book dates two months out on a rolling basis. So in May, I started making reservations for summer, and given the high demand, it was stressful. Although we wanted to stay two nights at Garibaldi Lake, we managed to get a one-night reservation for Garibaldi Lake and another for Taylor Meadows.

We would be taking a day off on Friday (July 30), and we planned to hike up to Garibaldi Lake at a leisurely pace. The next day, we would do the short hike to Taylor Meadows and explore the area. Finally, we would hike down from Taylor Meadows back to the parking lot on the third day. In total, it would be around 19 km round trip with 900 m vertical.

Including an early lunch stop in Squamish, it took us about two hours to arrive at the Rubble Creek Trailhead. Rangers were checking for day-pass/backcountry reservations before the parking lot. It was a weekday, but the parking lot was packed. Fortunately, we found a spot close to the trailhead.

It took us less than an hour to get to Garibaldi Lake from the Garibaldi Lake-Taylor Meadows trail junction. In the previous two instances, the weather was not great. But this time the weather was great, and we had a fantastic view of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

After setting up the tent, we went back to the lake. While Kavya waded in the ice-cold water, I hiked along the lake on the trail going to Mount Price. For a moment, I thought about making an early morning hike up to Mount Price but then decided against it.

The next day around 9 am we packed everything and went to the shelter for breakfast. It was cloudy. On our hike back along the Garibaldi Lake Trail, I was still in awe at the bright turquoise colour of the lake.

It took us less than an hour from the lake to get to Taylor Meadows campground. The weather was turning and started drizzling just as we pitched our tent. Kasturi had the foresight and had suggested that we pitch the tent at a site with a wooden platform. Soon it changed from a drizzle to rain showers and continued to rain for the next two and half hours. With nothing else to do, it was time for some hot soup and Uno.

It was on one such easy summer night in June 2007 that we met a couple of other families at the pool for dinner. Afterwards, we let the girls go for one more quick dip. Then, all of the kids hit the showers. Except for Abbey. She was still in the kiddie pool. I saw her sitting there and called for her.

When she stood up to get out, it was clear something was wrong. She looked dizzy. She walked sideways a couple steps. Then she fell, hitting her head on the pool deck, knocking out her front tooth, and falling into the adult swimming pool.

It was also during this time away from the hospital that a close friend of ours gave us four tickets to a Hannah Montana concert. Including a meet and greet before the show. A picture and autograph from Miley Cyrus, herself? The girls smiled for days.

For a couple of months, it looked like Abbey was on the normal road to recovery. It was bumpy, but the doctors had warned us to expect that. One step forward, two steps back. Both good days and very bad days. And that was exactly what we experienced. We lived by the daily stream of lab results. Quiet days became good days. It was in this manner that we learned to accept a new way of life. Life that was one day at a time.

She continued to have lots of problems with infection, too, and in early March 2008, her new organs began to fail. Devastatingly, her body was partially rejecting her liver. She needed kidney dialysis to remove excess fluid from her body.

Those nine months were a gift. If Abbey had died that night at the pool, we would never have known what a truly amazing girl she was. We were always impressed by how much she was aware of. She knew everything that was going on around her and spoke up when she questioned any of it.

Abbey may have lived a short life on the calendar. But she endured a long lifetime worth of pain and suffering. And through it all, she brought joy and happiness to every person who knew her. When she was at home that summer after getting out of the hospital, she used to call our voicemail from the house and leave messages for us. We will treasure those recordings forever.
