Nova Launcher continues to push the boundary of features available to home screen launchers. While most users are waiting for their OEMs to send out the Android 8.0 update, Nova provides access to many of Android Oreo's features to the 99.8% of devices currently using an older version. However, Nova tries not only to add new features but to improve their design.

A few weeks back, TelsaCoil Software released an update that added the search widget to the dock as found on the Pixel 2 lineup. Unlike the stock launcher with the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, Nova made the search widget optional so you could stick with the older dock design if you wanted. But now, they've improved on this feature by increasing the available widgets that can be placed in this position, so any 4 x 1 widget can be added to the expanded dock for easy access.

Once installed, open up Nova Launcher and long-press any empty space on the home screen. From there, choose "Settings," then select "Dock" and choose the "Searchbar in dock" option. At this point, Nova will present you with two choices for the placement of the search bar.

If you wish to replicate the look of the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, choose "Below icons." However, if you want your new widget above the current icons found in the dock, choose "Above icons." Once selected, return to the home screen to see the newly expanded dock with the search widget.

By default, a Google search widget will now be placed in the newly-expanded dock, but you can use any widget of your choosing. So long-press the search widget to bring up a sub-menu, then select the "Replace" option.

Nova continues to lead the charge with its home screen launcher by adding the latest features of Android. Not only did they add the customize widgets into the docks, but they updated the sub-menu to match the look found in Android 8.1 Oreo and added Adaptive icons to the stable version of Nova (these features were previously found in the beta version). Nova's quick ability to not only add new features but include additional functionality is one of the main reasons it made the top spot on our home screen launcher comparison. What widget are you using now in your dock? Leave us a comment below.

I just updated my operating system this am (8/29/2017) on my moto droid z force. I use the verizon messaging app, and when i get new text messages, I receive a notification in the notification bar, but the actual app icon does not show any new messages. I have multiple group messages on mute, so the only way to know if I have any new ones is to open the app now. Used to show the count in the right lower corner of the shortcut app icon. I have already restarted my phone. The app does not require an update, and I cannot uninstall and reinstall either.

I just purchased a Pixel 2. New messages will not appear on the Messages+ badge OR on my email client, Aqua Mail. I had an S3 that worked perfectly in this respect but it had other problems. I must return this phone because my job requires that I know when I receive a text message and an email. I cannot keep opening these applications every ten minutes to see if I have a new one. I have tried all the fixes described in this thread. this problem is a deal killer for me and I do not want to fool around with Nova launcher trying to rig a work around. So I am returning the phone today.

I've been fighting this for 4+months, very frustrating, same phone as others, same dated update with useless Motorola. Just restore the number next to the text box, just like the number next to phone and voicemail.

The single reply was a software template designed to automatically answer. One blogger then replied with more grace than I would have, with instructions to read the above comments because the answers to the machine generated response we're already there. Proof that the reply was electronically set off and not a human reply. Again what are we here for if Verizon is not addressing all our issues about abt ALL THEIR products?

Being a software programmer and web designer I am frustrated with Verizon's website in general - and that speaks volumes to the ignorance of the designers. It reeks of programming-ignorant upper management dictating to the skilled programming creators how they will do their job! There's no flow chart or logic and it's willy-nilly. As 99% of other websites are user-friendly intuitive and well-designed. We easily work through all others.

I don't attempt at failure on their website anymore to find what I'm looking for. May I suggest to others to do what I do? I always call customer support and IMMEDIATELY ASK FOR TECH SUPPORT! Walla!!! They walk me through where to find the thing I'm looking for. If this takes 10 minutes of my time it's better than 30 minutes trying to understand where and how to find what I am expecting the programming flowchart to do for me. It WAS designed by web creation ignorant upper management.

Ok...we've waited long enough. The developers know what the problem is. We have done the research and told you how to reproduce the problem. We have contacted the software developers more than once. So where is the update with fix? I'm tired of having to go to my homescreen and having to minimize what I'm doing in order to get to my messages!

Seriously. With the kind of money that we pay for Verizon service! You support is poor. You asking people to reiterate their problem each time is poor. This has been going on since the August update. They have all told you how to reproduce the problem and the workaround. I'm pretty disappointed at the sub-par support for a premium price network. It's time to start looking around I think at cheaper pricing at other carriers. Sad folks, just sad.

GWNI, no need to look elsewhere. You definitely deserve the service that you pay for. You mentioned that the issue started happening after updating the software on your phone. Do you have 3rd party applications downloaded to your device? If so, have you updated the software for those applications, as well?

The verizon messaging application is the only app I use for texting. I believe there were other applications pre-installed as well. I do not normally update items that are not being used as it wastes space. Like everyone else in the thread if I put a copy of the messaging icon on the "quick launch bar" (the bottom most row of the screen) it no longer displays the numeral of waiting messages in a circle. If I put a copy of the icon on any other row it does display. So it may be a problem with an update to the quick launch bar or it may have to do with the messaging application itself.

We understand that this is a concern for you, Gerard. I would feel the same way as a consumer. After review of the application I do show that this is a known issue which will be addressed in a new upcoming update. We should have more information and a resolution soon.

This is a known issue which is under investigation by the device vendor. This will be addressed in a future software update (SU11). The release date is under review and there is not a set date at this time.

Well another update has come and gone as of today (12/01/17) and still no fix for message +. Apparently, not a priority. I can't believe the number of times that "updates" have caused major issues with different built in apps on this phone. My first phone was only 1 month old when it had to be replaced (by a refurbished, of course...still paying new phone payments for a refurbished phone!) because of an update that destroyed Bluetooth on my phone. Really fed up...fix this!!

Posies, application updates are meant to improve your experience with the application and correct any known issues the application was causing. I regret to learn the recent update did not repair issues you are experiencing with your Verizon Messaging app. What exactly is going on with your messaging app? Can you verify which version Verizon Messaging app you are running. To view the app version, please tap on the Verizon Messaging app>Menu

Really!? Do any of you read any of the thread before you respond? Why bother responding at all? The title of this thread would answer your question...and responses of other Verizon customer support reps! A fix should have included placing the message + icon on the bottom bar...or at least allowing us to do it. Please find someone who has an actual answer!

After the recent update, I had been trying to move the widget back to the bottom bar with no luck. Couldn't tell if the update solved the problem not showing message count or not, since it was no longer on the apps bar. Tried moving app icon from the apps menu, not the widget menu and, lo and behold!, it worked! Came here to give the update and someone else had already shown it. YAY! It only took 4 month and the Moto Z users to answer each other's questions! Basically, has to be added back to the bar from the apps menu, not the widget menu!

I realize this is a really old thread, but I thought I'd post that I'm having this issue.

The app icon does not show the little red bubble with the white number in it indicating the number of unread text messages.

After reading through about 5 pages of comments on this thread, I found out that adding the 1x1 widget to my screen does indeed show the number of unread messages. However, the widget cannot be docked to the bottom of the screen, so I have to add the widget to all of my screens so that I can see that number when swiping from screen to screen on my phone, which is annoying but better than accidentally ignoring text messages for long periods of time.

I have explored every setting, both in the app and on my phone, but cannot get the app icon (which is dockable on the bottom of the screen) to show the number of unread messages.

My phone is a Moto Z3 (not the Play version, I have the regular Z3, which is Verizon exclusive).

In this picture, I have 1 unread text message. As you can see, the widget shows this, but the app icon does not. If I could drag the widget down to the bottom dock section of the screen, I'd be perfectly happy! But I can't. I can only put the app icon in the bottom dock, which doesn't show the number of unread messages. So my workaround of having the widget present on all screens is effective, but annoying (especially considering this is a Verizon stock app on a Verizon exclusive phone, as many others have commented).
