DHS Gardeners:

Thank to all who came out on the rainy Saturday work day.  Although we didn't get anything done in the garden, I think we made some headway in finding another location.  If you were unable to attend and want to know what was discussed, please email me.

Since the rain kept us from working, we have rescheduled the work day for this coming Saturday, December 13th from 9:00-12:00.  Trees Atlanta and the DHS students will be moving the plants from the polinator garden and the orchard and would like as much help as they can get.  They can't use all the plants, so if you would like to take some home with you on Saturday, please come prepared.  I would like to plant the herbs and the perennial flowers to the garden by the high school.

Let me know if you plan to come.

Thanks.

Hello gardeners,

Leonard Thibadeau kindly gave me a tour of the gardens behind Northern ave in Decatur this morning. They are also on city property that is on a flood plain near a creek, so I wanted to see how they manage with the “no structures” restriction.

I attach photos so you can see. Basically, it floods, and the chicken wire fencing is to trap debris that gets moved through with the flooding (up to 2 ft.) But they don’t consider it a problem. The ground was definitely soggy underfoot but not overwhelmingly wet; they have nice big garden plots (10 x 10) and things seemed to be growing well.

They do pump water from the creek (a founding member lives near enough to provide electricity for the pump) and treat it with clorox. So far no gardeners have gotten sick…

Tamara and Jan and I hope to do a walk-thru of the Westchester lot with the city engineer to complete our research of what may be possible.

Happy new year to all! May we garden together again in 2015!

Moira

Those look like some healthy collards ready for New Year's Day feasting in that compost bin!
Leonard, what's the sun exposure like there? Any idea of the number of hours of full sun? And could you guess how often it's flooded (water covering area) since you started gardening there?
Jan
