Makers! It's time to share... what have you been hacking on or making?

Reply to this email with a brief run-down of whatever projects have
been keeping you busy.

1. Church auction time again. Minor bug fixes, maven build
2. Learning iOS. I thought the idea of an iOS app consuming Ajax data served up from tomcat sounds like fun.
3. Summer wood working projects:
3.1. Emma is ready for a bed. I made her brothers so it is time to make her one as well.
3.2. We need a new kitchen table and I'm studying the history of table design and functionality. How to incorporate leaves, joinery, finishing.
3.3. It's time for a Lego table:)
3.4. Kids need another bookcase

Picked up a monstrously large monitor at a pawn shop. Ā
Removed one of the levels in my desk to accommodate the larger monitor, and experimented with different monitor configurations and their support in Linux Mint. Ā
Marveled at all of my additional screen real estate.
Cursed the state of video card drivers in Linux.

In other news, Mister Money on Richmond Street in Appleton has a ton of Kinect hardware that they're trying to get rid of. Ā They had 5 Kinect setups, and wanted 30 dollars for each one. Ā That seems scandalously inexpensive to me. Ā Perhaps a DHMN opportunity?

If you ever want to form a DHMN metal band, I quite enjoy playing what I
would consider "metal rhythm guitar" aka cannot-solo-like-you! \m/

I've been knitting. I can possibly get pics of the projects and link to them if you guys are interested. :D
Ā
Also, trying to hack my brain and muscle memory to play guitar.

I'd be interested, too. Ā I've been toying with the idea of 3D printing a knitting machine...

Don't forget hacking the ears ... I swear the timing is the biggest PITA
about learning guitar (I'm also learning... slowly).

What is the preferred online picture storage site of choice? (If that makes sense) I don't really post pictures on the web that often.

My ears were hacked by trumpet players years ago. :D
Ā
I have some hearing loss at specific frequencies and I place the blame entirely on trumpet players. That is not a quiet instrument by any stretch of the imagination.

Automotive Raspberry Pi entertainment system for my girls in my wife's car. Ā I have the RP running Raspbmc so far. Ā I plan to split the RCA video out to the headrest monitors and possibly add a small backup camera screen up front for control purposes.

I am still trying to figure out a simple, low cost, and easy to use way to control just the basic controls. I was thinking of trying to create something custom. Any ideas?Ā

Android XMBC remote app, perhaps? Ā Lacking that, you could use a Windows Media Center remote, but that might be a littleĀ unwieldyĀ in a car.

Let me know how you're progressing on this project. Ā I'm really interested in it.

I've been working on converting my company phone system to an internally hosted VOIP PBX using Freeswitch so I can tie in the calls to a customer contact database. Ā I'm planning to put it on 2 Cubieboards, with one as a failover. Ā  So far I've got it working well on Virtualbox using a basic Debian setup. Configuration of the PBX has been a big challenge though. Ā Freeswitch is great in a lot of ways. Ā Easy to understand documentation is not one of them.

There's a live video starting at 11 on using Freeswitch on the Pi to build a hard phone if anyone is interested. Ā http://www.voipusersconference.org/2013/freeswitch-pi/

I used the DHMN 3D printer and made a frog feeding cage yesterday.
I have a tiny little precious frog in a community aquarium, and when I try to feed him, all the other fish snap up his food right away, leaving him nothing to eat.
So I printed a feeding box with a hole just big enough for him to get in(so I thought).
I loaded it up with food, turned out the lights, and went to bed.
In the morning, all of his food was gone, but his belly didn't look any fatter.Ā
I imagine one or more of the other fish were like the greatest magicians in the world, and squeezed their fat butts in and ate up all of the frog food.
I think revision 2 of the frog feeding box needs to include a RFID triggered door.

I have been trying to create a 3D design to print on the DHMN 3D printer, but I've been running into issues on selecting which program to use to create the 3D design.

I'd prefer to use Linux, but I guess I'm flexible.

Another thing: does anyone have a caliper that I could borrow? Ā I'm having issues translating reality to 3D design.

Thanks!

Ross,

Depending on what you are making, I'd look at openscad. The learning curve isn't bad if you can read/write code.

Fair enough. Ā As a bonus, Tim Bolz recently did an excellent presentation on OpenSCAD at NEWLUG:

I would also recommend OpenSCAD, given your programming background. Ā I also have a pair of calipers you can borrow.

Computer crashed last week (freecorder hosed up registry beyond repair), sorry it took so long to reply.

I'd be down for a dhmn band, but i'd prefer not to limit it to metal. i think it would be way cooler to have some sort of community involvement / open mic kind of thing that anyone can join in on regardless of skill level or genera preference. that said, if the community wants to play metal, then bring it on.

on a side note, i finally have some time again and will be returning to the thursday night meetings within the next few weeks.Ā
