If anyone is interested in helping do some cleanup work on the new DHMN makerspace, come on down to the basement of 120 N. Morrison St on Saturday, March 30, at 10 AM. Paul Willems and Mike Van Thull are doing cleanup of materials from the back wall and may work on one or two other things.

Go in the main entrance of 120 Morrison, then down the first floor hallway to the door across from the Fox Valley Vietnam Veterans Association. Go through the door and down the stairs to the DHMN makerspace and just introduce yourself to Paul and Mike, then start helping out.

Wear work clothes that can get dirty!

I want to bring up the topic of painting.  Is anybody out there interested in painting the makerspace (murals, basecoat, etc)?

If no one has any immediate ideas, we should probably tell the owners to paint the walls a simple beige or something. (they have offered to paint before we move in)  We want the new space to look nice and clean in photos, so we can attract more members.  Mural or artistic painting could always be added on top.

Alex -- if a consensus can be quickly reached about painting, you should have Paul K talk to Mike Van Thull about that as soon as possible. -- L-Dron

I am willing to help project stuff on the walls for painting. We should have a 3d breakdown of some cool gadget or a DHMN logo
I am willing to do anything that needs doing to up my membership status to full member. So painting, networking, simple carpentry, pluming, electrical wiring for benches, ducting for fume vents, etc...
I just will need a ride to and from the space, my truck died :(

This weekend doesn't work for me, but next week I will have time available if there is more cleanup going on then.

I can paint. No problem.  I can make time this week. Let me know what you want or just let me at it and I'll make it cool.

All right!  That's what I was waiting to hear.  Would you like the owners to put down a base coat, or would you rather handle it all yourself?

As needs/opportunities for cleanup or other work in the makerspace come up, we'll post the details on the mailing list. Thanks for the offer to help, Kristin!

I think until the back wall is redone, the electrician is finished, and the DHMN has one or several meetings to discuss what work we want to do in/on the makerspace in the near future, there isn't any cleanup or other tasks needed in the facility.

I just looked downstairs at the main workroom, and the back wall debris was all cleaned up and looked ready for the wall repair guys to come in next week (hired by Willems Marketing).

The next step regarding work or fix-up that needs to be done is to have lots of suggestions brought up and one or couple meetings held (in the makerspace!  :)  to discuss and vote on what we're going to do first.

We need to do three things before painting:
  1. Circulate on the mailing list the specifics of what painting is planned to be done.
  2. Get some kind of consensus that the planned work is agreeable to the group (officers agree?, straw poll?, ???).
  3. Paul Klemstine runs the plan past Mike Van Thull and gets his approval, because Mike's the guy who's responsible for the building. There may come a point where Mike tells us, "don't bother asking me, just do it" but at this early point in our relationship with Willems Marketing, the last thing we want to do is have them be unpleasantly surprised when they walk into the basement.
The reason to do both one and two is that each DHMN member knows that what they want to do in the space is the right thing to do, but if a couple people decide they'll do X one week, some others do Y the next week and still others do Z the following week, at some point we'll end up with bad feelings that could have been avoided, and we'll start losing members because people don't feel like they're part of the group and like they don't have a say in what is done with the space.

Sorry to be such a wet blanket, but it's a small space and there's no rush to get lots of changes made to the space in the next week or two. Or if there is a need to make some quick changes, everyone should be aware of what's proposed and there should be general agreement that it's the right thing to do.

I dropped by today to hang out with L-Dron for a bit and met Mike Van Thull.

Mike has offered to get the wallpaper off and a base-coat on by sometime this weekend, and as soon as we give him a key-count, we can hand out keys after for access starting as early as Monday if our Pres is cool with that.

@Ed: could you confirm to Paul K if you recommend they paint us a base coat, and if so, what color.

Mike VT asks that we continue to communicate all of our decisions back through Paul K as a single point of contact to Mike VT.

PS: my vote for continued organization is to use the Trello board, and as a first step in getting further organized.  If we could formally make it the place for DHMN to organize, that would help greatly to capture everyone's ideas.  I'm still a little fuzzy though on how things are prioritized in that system....

Trello is ideal as wiki-replacer for the following reasons:

* At it's heart, a wiki is user contributable text/images. Trello does this very well.
* Trello offers an login mechanism we all already have - Google
* Trello does not need system-side care and feeding like a wiki does. (patches, vulnerabilities, user accounts, spam, bots, etc.)
* Trello is built to organize info into lists
* Trello handles notifications, subscriptions, voting, avatars
* Trello is free as in beer

If you guys want keys on Monday, I'm okay with that.
My biggest concern before opening the space are that we are insured, and do we need a liability waiver for all the members? I imagine so.
I've called a few places and requested quotes, and we'll see what quote Paul Willems gets for us from his insurer.
I will contact Mike Van Thull for all our building needs if you keep me in the loop for what we need.

It seems that we really don't need to buy anything to furnish the space yet, members will be donating some chairs, tables and tools.

There are other things we can use:
more tables, chairs?
coffee pot
Sofa, lounge furniture
decorations/ safety posters
tv/projector
tools
maybe two-three decent working public computer stations, perhaps one windows, one linux, one mac?

Can we get _a_ key by Thursday so we could provide a tour to the members that haven't seen it?

I think Thursday would be the best for handing out keys if needed, plus like Mark said. Show the place off as well.
