I've always wondered about this subject and while reading slashdot.org i happened across this article and thought others might be interested.

It takes a bit to wade through the comments, but there are several threads that seem to have value.

The consensus seems to point to capacitor/component failure do to poor cooling.

Several people describe re-soldering new capacitors to the boards.

Wow. yet another reason to learn to solder.
