Dear colleagues and friends,

I am happy to announce the upcoming workshop I am organizing on digital data-sharing. This is the third in the 2021 series of PJRW workshops. Unlike the previous two, which were larger public webinars, this workshop will be more intimately-scaled Zoom "roundtable" with shorter presentations and longer "break out room" discussions. The idea for this mini workshop sprung out of my experience putting together the Tekagami & Kyogire digital exhibition. Thus, although the general focus is on Buddhist materials, I am personally interested in hearing thoughts and ideas, and about ongoing/new DH projects within and beyond Buddhism.

Please find details in English translation below. Japanese poster attached.

The workshop will be in Japanese. But I am hoping to keep the discussions low key and I do not believe any of the panelists will mind if the conversation turned into a Japanese-English blend. To ensure robust group discussions, I reserved few slots for invited participants based on the panelists' recommendations. But we have about 15 slots available. If you are partaking in or interested in launching a digital humanities project, please consider joining us!

Also, I would very much like to extend invitations particularly to junior scholars and graduate students for whom DH experience is increasingly relevant. So, if you know of anyone who is working on a DH project or might be interested in this workshop, I would appreciate it if you could either forward this message or (if you feel appropriate) send me a recommendation, so that I can reach out personally.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

Truly,
Akiko

2021 Pre-modern Japanese Religion Workshop (PJRW)

Roundtable: Present and Future in Digital Data-sharing of Buddhist Materials

9 am-12 pm, May 2, 2021 (Japan Standard Time)

Zoom (link will be shared with attendees on or after May 1)

Maximum: 30 participants

Contact: awa...@uoregon.edu (Akiko Walley)

Focusing on the theme of chihō (region or periphery) broadly conceived, PJRW approaches the new online social environment as a moment to reflect on the limitations of present methods of scholarly interactions and to rectify the centralization of people and resources by spotlighting cutting-edge research conducted by specialists in regional institutions and significant works held outside of Japan or major cities. The third meeting of 2021 will be a roundtable designed to stimulate conversation among panelists and attendees. Following short presentations, we will have series of breakout sessions to discuss the present and future of digital data-sharing.
