Warm greetings, dear Venerable monastics & Dhamma friends -

As the moon waxes growing bright, we look forward to the upcoming Magha Full Moon "Sangha Day" this coming Friday Feb 26th. This full moon is a special day in Buddhism for the Sangha, the lunar anniversary of the first spontaneous reunion of the early Sangha of arahants with the Buddha, the Buddha's teaching of the Ovada Patimokkha, his appointment of chief disciples, and his transmission of the ability to offer full acceptance into the monastic Sangha to his disciples. We will also be remembering and commemorating the Parinibbana of the great disciple of the Buddha, our Bhikkhuni foremother Mahapajapati Gotami Theri, together with the founding 500 Theris, this coming full moon. Warm welcome to join us on this special full moon day and night.

Mahapajapati Gotami is said to have decided her Parinibbana (final Nirvana) at the time of the Buddha's own announcement of his own impending great final passing (Maha Parinibbana) on the Magha/February full moon. According to the texts,[1,2] after offering final teachings for seven days straight, the great arahanti Maha Gotami Theri and the great 500 entered Parinibbana together on the eighth day lunar quarter following the Magha full moon. This year, the actual day, the eighth day (the Māghamāsaṁ Kaṇhapakkhaṁ Aṭṭhamī Uposatha or in full Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī saddhiṃ Mahārahantī Pañcasatabhikkuṇīparivārehi Parinibbāṇaṃ Aṭṭhamī in Pāli), will be on March 5th. We will commemorate this day all together on the Sangha Day Magha Full Moon also known as Magha Puja "Sangha Day" in Thai Theravada traditions and in Sri Lanka "Navam Poya" during our Winter Retreat time Full Moon Uposatha program.
