Celebrating Sanghamitta Day at Dhammadharini Monastery Dec 10 & 11, 2016

The full moon night of December 10 is a special anniversary in Buddhism honoring the arrival of the arahant bhikkhuni Sanghamitta Theri on the shores of the beautiful isle of Sri Lanka. There she brought the light of Dhamma, a sapling of the sacred Bo-tree from Bodhgaya, and the lineage of full ordination for women in Buddhism.

It was a time of rejoicing, celebrated by the king and all the people, with Queen Anula entering the first stages of awakening upon hearing the Dhamma, and herself going forth to become a bhikkhuni together with many of her fellow countrywomen. In some parts of contemporary Sri Lanka, Sanghamitta Day is celebrated as "Women in Buddhism Day".

All of the Bhikkhuni Sanghas in our world today trace their lineage back through their foremother Sanghamitta.  Our Dhammadharini Sangha and Friends of Dhammadharini offer our gratitude to her.

We’ll celebrate this full moon at the Dhammadharini Monastery in Penngrove.

On this day, in which we feel the great cycles of our world and earthly embodiment, and the movement from going into the darkness to going into the light, i would like to appreciate, commemorate and celebrate all women in the Dhamma.  All my bhikkhuni and upasika sisters both young and old, back to the most ancient of our enlightened foremothers, to those who travelled long and far and wide to share the Dhamma, to those to come.  — Ayya Tathaaloka

All dear friends,

I look forward to seeing you under the waxing full moon together with Stars at Dawn author Wendy Garling and bhikkhuni teachers including Amma Thanasanti this Sunday Dec 11th at our new monastery for this second of four events in our yearlong celebration of the 2600-Year Anniversary of our Bhikkhuni Sangha.

Sunday will be my last day in Sonoma County before departing across the great waters to New Zealand for the Third Intensive Session of our Bhikkhuni Vibhanga Project, with a little stop in Australia along the way (more on that soon).  Hopefully i will be back in time for the third of the four events in this series in February.

I leave you with this new beautiful rendition of our venerable foremother arahant bhikkhuni Sanghamitta Theri's arrival in Sri Lanka with the Bo tree sapling and Bhikkhuni Sangha on the December full moon, 3rd century BCE.
