Hey Shane. Thanks for talking with me last night regarding the reseach advisor position. Regarding the athlete below, is his scoliosis functional versus structural? Structural scoliosis with a wedge shaped thoracic vertebra is a contraindication to manipulation at that particular area where the curves meet. If it is a functional scoliosis, how long has it been there? If it is functional, there is probably a capsular tightness possibly due to imbalanced multifidi in his spine.
I just spent the last 9 months flying to Seattle to finish my PhD. Finished that in December. The treatment techniques we worked on was advanced manipulations, without risk due to working within a barrier versus taking the patients' joints to end ranges and lock outs. For most thoracic manipulations, I'm adept. If he is a really big boy, I have difficulty. If he is more quarter back, running back physique, I can do it. If he is a linebacker, forget it!
Also, I do manipulate the ribs, tape them down, work on respiratory training so that they don't elevate again, and then core. My core training will be specific to his tissue in lesion and improvement in function in sport. If it isn't sufficienct for this future college football player, I'd be happy to do what I can and then have him continue training with someone who trains football players at that level.
