I thought you might be vegetarian, Chandra. That's why I asked.

The obvious thought is Spiral Diner, but I personally have ridden the
Magnolia area quite a bit and was hoping to explore new territory.

Maybe look at FortWorthology.com; the author is vegetarian and has
done several restaurant reviews in the blog. I think we should find
our destination first, then decide on a route.

La Familia is within easy riding distance from Trinity Trails, and
they serve veggie tacos and chalupas.

playing on Saturdays?

Hey Chandra, I've never ridden the train before, but it looks like you
could ride the TRE into downtown and be pretty close to everything.

In a bold display of leadership, Myles creates an organized framework
for discussion. The enthusiasm builds, as collaborators weigh in.
Appetites are stimulated. Individual plans are laid so that all
converge in Fort Worth, Texas for the inaugural DFWBikeBlogs Slow
Social Tour.

Let's see...we have a date. We have a destination. Did someone
mention a start time?

Although I can think of no place I'd rather be, I might have a
conflict on that day. You guys make something work, I'll be there if
I can and post on my blog either way.

Hey guys, any thoughts on a route. Chandra will be arriving by train
so we should probably start near the train station. Maybe that will
encourage more out-of-towners to attend. As for destinations, the Jazz
Cafe at 2504 Montgomery, and La Familia at 841 Foch are the only
suggestions so far.

As for a route, how about this: Riding from downtown, go south into
Fairmount area, check out Panther City Bikes on Magnolia, then head
west through Fairmount toward Berkley/Ryan Place neighborhood, then
past the Zoo and into Colonial Country Club area, then maybe down to
TCU and visit Colonel's Bike Shop. Then go further west into Overton
Park, south on Overton Park East, then back north on Overton Park
West, pick up the Trinity Trail at Overton Creek, then out to the
Trinity. Follow the River back toward downtown and get off at 7th
Street and eat at La Familia (I suggest that over Jazz Cafe because it
is easy access from the trail). After eathing, go east on 7th back
toward downtown.

Let me try to map it and see how it comes out. Most of the route is
through neighborhood streets or on the Trinity Trail. Probably less
than 20 miles, maybe even less than 15. I can add or subtract loops
to get about the right distance.

Myles/rattrappress

Here's a sample route based on the Jazz Cafe as the destination. It's
not as long as it sounds.

Ride north from the train station to 3rd/ 4th Street.
East on 3rd/ 4th across the river to the Trinity Trail trailhead.
North on the TT around the north side of downtown to Trinity Park.
Ride the TT to the west side of Trinity Park and head north on Foch to
Lancaster.
West on Lancaster to Rip Johnson.
Rip Johnson south to Harley.
West on Harley, cross Montgomery, continue west to Owasso.
South on Owasso to Byers.
East on Byers to Margaret.
South to Birchman and Montgomery to eat at the Jazz Cafe.

I don't know what the mileage would be including the return trip.

I plan to ride the Raleigh DL-1 Tourist 3-speed. That should keep the
pace nice and leisurely.

Here is a route we could do that would take us to Panther City,
Colonel's, then along the Trinity Trail and through Forest Park to La
Familia. It's 13 miles total before eating, and less than 3 miles
back to the train station. If we want, we can linger around downtown
and/or check out the Water Gardens after eating.

It takes in a lot of scenic Fort Worth.

I've also invited Miles, a cyclist who lives in Cleburne. I met him a
few weeks ago, although we couldn't work it out so we could ride
together. He has an old Raleigh Superbe.

As long as his name is spelled different, we should manage.

I like the route but with some minor road substitutions, like maybe
riding on Jennings instead of Hemphill. Have you ever ridden your DL-1
down the hill on Ranch Road? We might need to detour around that.
Otherwise it looks like a winner. I also agree about the Water Garden.
I think the open area between the Water Garden and the Convention
Center would be a good place to hang out post ride.

I think we can meet most anywhere if we meet at 10. Checked the new
TRE schedule and it gets to
ITC at 9:40 & T&P at 9:45. For anyone driving to the start. There's
lots of parking around the Water Garden, though it may not be free. As
I recall, there is free parking along the Trinity and at the shopping
mall next to the Apple Store on University.

Be gentle with us. A first ride is better short and scenic. It's the
company that's the attraction.
-Steve A

PS: Is Reed/ChipSeal on this list? I know he makes it to TRE on
occasion. I've never met him in person, though I did meet Keri Caffrey.

There's a large Park & Ride lot at the south entrance to the T&P
station on Vickery between Main & Jennings. That would be a great
place to meet up. Convenient for the TRE, cars, and cyclists.

I don't think you have to pay for metered parking spaces on weekends. If I'm wrong, the lot across the street from the train station is $4 for a full day. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll check the Convention Center calender to see what's happening that day.

What is T&P? Is it the name of the station? 10 AM is fine. I will ride from there to the Parking Lot on Vickery between Main and Jennings.

I will check with DART/TRE on when to catch the train in Irving.

I thought I would try to ride there (just a crazy thought LOL) but I will have to get up too early :)

This venue and time are good for me.

Okay, to sum it all up, we're meeting and starting at @10 AM from the
park and ride near the T&P station. We will be riding the route that
Doohickie posted with stops at bike shops along the way. We will be
eating at La Familia and riding to the finish at the Water Garden (or
continue on to T&P).

I'll start working on a blog post inviting anybody and everybody to
attend. If everybody else can do the same hopefully we'll generate
some interest.

What other details have we left out. Do we want to give this ride a
name? Helmet optional? Lycra free?

Steve A

unread,
Oct 8, 2009, 6:47:24 PM10/8/09
to dfwbik...@googlegroups.com, DFWBikeBlogs
Sounds like a plan. I think some name might be good. I vote that it
doesn't have the word "ride" in it. Maybe something that gets across
we're meeting people we know at one level but have never met. I think
it's sort of a bicycle admiration society. Hey, maybe something in
that vein...

Let's leave helmets & Lycra to what people want to do. It's an
eclectic group. Anybody asks we can tell them "clothing is required -
we're not trying to start a nudist colony."

For Chandra, T&P is the westernmost stop on TRE. We could also get off
a stop earlier & still make it by 10.

Well, Steve, you have breeched all of my objections!

If I roll out of home by a quarter to 6, I should have no problem with
train connections and such.

Ya ll should be relieved that my pace be restrained by the 27 mile
trip to the Ledbettor train station. My heart is gladdened by
Doohickie's choice of bikes! I will be wearing Lycra shorts, but a
loose fitting long sleeved shirt. (I have found that if I wear a tight-
fitting jersey it tends to spook horses.) And because part of my route
passes through a portion of the City of Dallas, I will be wearing a
helmet.

May I suggest a name for the ride? "Odd Fellows Odyssey- an event ya
oughta see!"

Where's Rantwick would be amusing from a post standpoint, however. All

I was going to pass word along to Bike Friendly Oak Cliff about the
ride but I don't see an email address anywhere. Does anybody know the
guy that runs the blog? Where else should we announce the ride?

NOTBBC = NOrth Texas Bicycle Bloggers Coalition

I like CATTS and BABBLE also.

I've been communicating to BFOC through facebook.

In fact. IF you guys do Facebook, that's a great place to start a 'group' for coordinating group rides, etc. (sorry if that was already mentioned. I'm still getting caught up on this email thread).

Hey DD, I guess I'm going to sound like an old man. I've got a
Facebook account but have never really used it. When Etsy Fort Worth
was organizing they set things up using Google Groups and I liked how
simple it was. Maybe Facebook would be the better route to take. We'll
have to hear from the other old men here. Thanks for mentioning the
ride to BFOC for us. Have you received any feedback on it?

No Facebook account here.  I can barely keep up with email and blogging.

I guess, just like in my racer wannabe days, I'll be dropped from the peloton again.

Hey Paul M, we need to do an age check on this group, that name just
might be applicable..

I just logged in to my Facebook account for the first time in ages.
It's always been little confusing for me. I haven't checked my Myspace
page since I shutdown the print shop. I'm like you Chris, having a
hard time keeping up lately.

If by Paul M., you mean Paul H. (me), I'll chime in:

My age? Let me just say this:

GET OFF MY LAWN YOU ROTTEN KIDS.

*hikes belt line up over belly button and stamps back into the house*

To summarize: No, I don't Facebook.

Over the hill? I'm not ready to give up cycling and take up golf yet. Besides, who wants to go over a lot of hills for what was supposed to be relaxing?

Does somebody want to volunteer to announce the ride on Bike Forums?

Do you think we should advertise it on Craigslist?

I don't get face-book either. I prefer full thought out essays not single paragraph assertions.

I fit the "over-the-hill" moniker, except there isn't (start real deep Texas drawl) any real hills 'round these  here parts. Now in the itty bitty state where I growed up, why thems were hills. Whoo-wee let me tell you! One hill was so long you had to start up it in spring just to get to the top by Thanksgiving!  There was this one fella who... (fade out , the rest of the long-winded story)

Awesome reply Paul H (me).  You gave me a good laugh with that one!
To summarize:  No, I don't Face-book.

Have we settled on a name? BABBLE sounded
good. Can't say I was fond of the Over the Hill stuff. We could just
call it some variant of "no name." I think we'll have an eclectic mix
of people & bikes.

Any notion if there are likely to be 5 or 50 or ??? That ought to play
a role in the final route. With those new bike lanes, Magnolia is
tougher for a medium size group than it used to be.

I can stay in the neighborhood for part of the route, but I think we
can do Magnolia okay on a Saturday morning. I've gone through there
on breakfast rides with groups of a dozen or so and it wasn't too
bad. Realistically I would expect the people that have posted to this
thread, plus maybe 3 or 4 more, and probably nothing more. I'm not
sure how big we want to make this.

I would suggest someone touching base with La Familia. Make sure we
know when they open, and ask if we can call ahead with reservations
(once we know the exact number in the morning).

I think we'll have the core group and maybe a few others which is fine for our first attempt.

I may end up at the courthouse for work today, if that happens I'll try to make it over to La Familia.

i am looking forward to this.

one question though:
do we have to (at all) worry about having a large number of participants, some of whom might want to make this a venue for expressing their views (such as Critical Mass), boldly?

having said that, do we need to put together a list of what not to do during the ride?

Yeah, I'm here.

Chandra- My bike club does an open ride (although we do not go out of
our way to publicize it) every Saturday morning. We don't get mobbed
with outsiders. I went to a vintage bike show last January over in
Dallas and afterward they did a big huge group ride. It was a little
more chaotic, but still everyone was cool. If people really wanted to
do political-activist stuff on bikes in Fort Worth, they'd be doing it
already. Fort Worth, in my opinion, doesn't have a tremendous need
for such antics, as cyclists are already treated fairly well. There's
just no reason for it.

On a Saturday morning we won't be the only group our riding our bikes
together. This won't be all that unusual.

Well, I haven't had a chance to talk to the people at La Familia,
things have been crazy at work. If for some reason they can't fit us
in, we can go around the corner to Chimy's, or ride around the block
to the new Love Shack. Either way we'll get fed.
