Hey DeAnna.

I agree with what you say above.

BTW, David, are you going to post your mailing-list events here? We have a movie
for Thursday, and a bookstore visit Friday.

I wonder if people realize that this is not a PERSONAL AD newsgroup?? I am
sort of getting tired of opening up DFW Singles to look for events going on
and finding all these personal ads.

This newsgroup used to be a lot of fun to read and chatter, but it is getting
to be boring now. I wish people would realize that we do have a dfw.personal
newsgroup.

Oh well, I guess some people are desparate for attention that they are willing
to spam across many newsgroup in order to receive any attention.

Anyway, I hope that you all had a great New Year Eve and Happy New Year!

Yeah, I guess I should, so from the archive of
http://www.montagar.com/dfw-singles/archive/dfw-singles.1996-01 ...

Two upcoming events this next week:

Thursday Night, Jan 11:

Event: Movie - "12 Monkeys"
Where: Cinemark 17
Time: Showtime at 7:15, Meet at 6:45 in lobby

Starring Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, and Madeline Stowe,
screenplay by Terry Gilliam.
Look for someone with a ;-) button in the lounge

Friday Night, Jan 12:

Event: Bookstore Get-together
Where: Borders Books, Preston and Royal Lane
Time: around 7:00, gather in the coffee area and peruse
books throughout the evening.

It's been a while since we've done a bookstore gathering.
A chance to look at some interesting books, discuss titles,
authors, and have some coffee. Bring a little cash or a
credit card, since it's typically hard to get out of a book
store without buying something.

Well, at least we can be happy that close to half of the messages on the
newsgroup yesterday were from people who are on the mailing list. I, for
one, have continued to email people who crosspost irrelevant messages into
dfw.singles (although I haven't said anything to those who post personal
ads). I send one person a copy of my pre-written message each day I read
the newsgroup, which takes me about 5 seconds to send.

Of course, we could use the newsgroup for what it was intended for--
event-related chatter! So, who's planning a Martin Luther King Day party?

Some of us don't get that day off!

BTW,
Does anyone have any comments on that new complex on Belt Line in Addison,
looks like a new Dave & Busters? Somebody got the info?

I don't have that day off. I wonder maybe if we should create a new newsgroup
- dfw.singles.activities. Maybe people would get a CLUE as to what this
newsgroup is all about! :)

Seems that way, DeAnna. I don't think that works as an excuse for them, though.

It has been suggested (by Deanna) that we start a new newsgroup for the
DFW-Internet Singles, so that we can coordinate our activities. I'm
gonna go just one step further, and suggest we leave the word "singles"
out of it. Now I know that will hurt the chances of newbies finding the
new newsgroup, but I think it will go a long way in stopping the flood
of CRAP that people keep cross posting onto our newsgroup.

How about "dfw.activities"?

I don't get that day off either, but since when did we need a day off from
work to have a party?

Your suggestion to create a new newsgroup is a great one, and I think
dfw.singles.activities is the perfect name for it. The fact is, it's not
obvious from the name that personal ads don't belong here. I think a name
like dfw.activities would encourage people to post annoucements about their
high school's production of "My Fair Lady."

Feh, it's not clear enough. How about "dfw.singles.no.blasted.personals"?

I agree with you Howard, the only reservations would be these
people who post the personals, don't seem to care about eddie
cut. They would probably post just to spite us. We ask them
not to cross post, but we get more cross postings than ever
before. It just makes it more difficult to discuss among
ourselves things that relate to dfw.singles. I wish I knew a
solution, but I'm long on want - short on technology.

I still would like to have the new singles in the area, have a
place to try to locate and communicate with others that are
in the same situation. Plus the activities are a great way of
meeting new people in a more relaxed atmosphere with no
pressures.

We really can't leave the name singles out of it because although
we are primarily a social group, one of the purposes is to attract
singles and to provide them with a place to meet people.

DFW activities is way too broad of a name. We will get tons of people
coming in asking which amusement parks are good for their kids,
people asking about bead & breakfasts, and all types of establishments
advertising "activities."

The only thing to do would be to go with dfw.singles.moderated.

This would allow us to cut down on the personals and dating
service advertisements. Ideally one packet from a dating service
would be answered with, oh, let's say 1000 packets advising them that
we do not accept such solicitation. They'd get the idea pretty damn quick.

But then there's the problem of finding a suitable moderator, and
also what to moderate. After reading one or two messages
from the "approaches in a nightclub" and "do women play
headgames?" threads, I've ceased to pay attention to them,
as I have to many other threads.

Didn't one of the levels of Dante's Inferno contain a guy who
had to read each and every one of those posts?

Interesting idea. I volunteer David Cathey as moderator.

Those have been in my kill file forever.

I think he's in the same bolgia with the Mentos advertising executives,
you know, the one filled with shit?

On that note, since I just read the book a bit over a month ago, and am
still working on _Paradiso_, in Ptolomea (near the center of Hell), are
the souls of people so horrid that they fell to Hell w/o dying first. I
think Cantor & Siegel qualify for this.

(refers to _Inferno_ again) In my previous message, I was thinking of Bolgia 2.

I like to think of this holiday as "Robert E. Lee's Birthday" rather
than MLK day.

Yeah, but I think David is busy enough as it is without having to keep up with
the mailing list and working on his projects, etc. etc. I really think we
need to get another newsgroup instead of forcing someone to be a moderator!!

I need to figure out how to kill in Newxpress. If anyone uses NewsXpress,
please let me know how to use the kill file! I would be grateful!

Two words: Yeah RIGHT!! LOL!! I have less time than you do! Why don't we
volunteer you to be the moderator of DFW.Singles in spite the fact that you
are not living in Boston instead of Dallas!!

When are you going to move back to Dallas or will you be staying in Boston
with all those snow while we are in our upper 70's this weekend? It is LOVELY
out there today. In fact, I just might go sit on my patio and finish my work!
