This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We had two gamers today.
Today’s game was my Memoir ‘44. We began with scenario #36 Schwammenauel Dam, set on Feb. 4-9, 1945. Jeff G took the attacking Allied side, while I ran the German forces, which were on the defensive. Victory threshold: 6 medals. This was our first map that contained mountains (15 of them). In this scenario they were basically just a movement impediment, as ground forces were not allowed to enter them. The two main strategic objectives for the Allies were the Urft and Schwammenauel Dams. Ah, but the Germans could try to sabotage their own dams so that they didn’t fall into Allied hands. And each dam destroyed by the Germans was worth 4(!) victory points to them. Yet it would take some superb die rolling to achieve this.
The only specialized troops in this scenario were two British paratrooper units. All the rest were standard armored and infantry units (no artillery). The only tank units were two on the Allied back row, behind forests and mountains. So it would be difficult to get armored units to the front lines.
On turn one I began rolling two dice each turn trying to sabotage the Schwammenauel dam, as I began with an infantry unit on it. Alas, it was quite difficult, as the dice were not particularly helpful. I made some progress, but never enough to matter in victory points.
Combat ended up being rather static. As neither of us wanted to leave the cozy towns we ere in, where we had good defensive bonuses. But we eventually did and closed with each others forces. Then the bloodletting began in earnest. Eventually several infantry units were put out of action on both sides. So in the end it turned out to be a squeaker.
Scores: Michael W / Germans 6, Jeff G / Americans 5. Duration: 54 minutes.
We then set the board back up and turned it around. Now Jeff ran the German side, while I controlled the Allied attackers. However this time, the result couldn’t have been more different. My Allied dice were smokin’ hot. While Jeff’s German dice had gone stone cold. Jeff’s Germans did inflict 13 casualties on my Americans, but I put 21 hits on his Germans.
Scores: Michael W / Americans 6, Jeff G / Americans 0. Duration: 35 minutes. I reckon at some point in the past I’ve been skunked in Memoir ‘44. But if so, it been so long ago I don’t recall it. For it is quite a rarity. Needless to say, there was again no dam demolitions.
We then moved on to the next scenario: #37 [Operation Grenade] Across the River Roer, set on February 24, 1945. I ran the attacking Allied side, while Jeff controlled the defending Germans.
My Americans began on one side of the Roer River. At this point the Roer was rather shallow and could be forded by infantry. On the German side Jeff had laid mines in six hexes, that would be likely attack avenues for my Americans.
The Germans had two armored units, and one artillery battery, while their other seven units were infantry. Most of the German units were in defensive terrain. So my Americans (ten infantry and three artillery) had the burden of attack. As expected I took heavy casualties whenever my Americans moved forward into the Germans crosshairs.
Basically I got pasted, taking two hits for every one hit I inflicted on Jeff’s Germans. It was compounded by me making a dumb move. For some reason I was under the impression the five German minefields would be weak (like they are in some of the East Front scenarios). So I had the Russian minefields strengths in my mind, where half of them are strength zero. And I think none are more than a “2”. Well, I got a rude awakening when my infantry charged through Jeff’s minefields. For the first two I entered were strength 3! and 5!!. Well, that crippled my offensive. For after that it was all downhill for me.
Scores: Jeff G / Germans 6, Michael W / Americans 3. Duration: 64 minutes.
At this point we were past our usual quitting time. So we’ll have to wait until next time to turn the board around and play again.
