This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We initially had two gamers on this fairly cool (for a change) afternoon.

Today’s first game was my Memoir ‘44, scenario #37 ‘Across the River Roer‘, set on Feb. 24, 1945. Jeff ran the Allied side, while I lead the German troops. I had a hand advantage of six cards, while Jeff held four. I made a point mid-game of entering my own minefields, to get as close as possible to the enemy. Alas I would not be able to grapple in close combat, for my units could not cross the river. So I used my two armored units on my left flank to good effect. To counter my efforts Jeff continually peppered my troops with long range artillery fire from the three batteries on his side of the river.

Eventually my Germans closed on the river, trying to get as near as possible to the enemy, in order to fire more effectively. In that effort I lost three tanks, but I managed to get a goodly amount of licks in too. For I eliminated one of Jeff’s artillery units, and eventually a large amount of infantry (24 figurines). And now and then my lone artillery battery on my right flank got in a couple of critical hits on the Americans; enough to achieve the victory threshold of destroying six Allied enemy units.

Scores: Michael W / Germans 6, Jeff G / Americans 1. Duration: 48 minutes.

It was then time to leave World War II and travel back to the 12th century for a game of Jeff’s Carcassonne. For Berry V had finally joined us (at 2:17), so it was time for a Euro type game. Jeff and I gave her good advice throughout the game, which was new to her. She did quite well for a rookie.

For about 85% of the game I remained in third place on the score track. Yet in final scoring my farmers turned the tide in my favor. Even so, it was a close game overall. Berry quite enjoyed it.

Scores: Michael W 83, Jeff G 77, Berry V 74. Duration: one hour and six minutes.
