This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We had two gamers today. Luckily there were no loud musicians this afternoon. Though it was just a tad muggy.

Today’s game was my Memoir ‘44. Specifically, scenario #43 “Breakout to Lisyanka" February 16-17, 1944. As it was winter, we used the snow covered board. In our first game I commanded the defending Russian forces, while Jeff G ran the attacking German troops. There were three ravine hexes for German infantry to hide in mid-board. There was a frozen river running along the back of the Russian area. Any German units exiting the board that way (if the ice didn’t break!) would yield extra victory points for the Germans. Alas none managed to do that today. The Russians had two elite armor units, as did the Germans. Overall the scenario was very evenly balanced as to unit types and terrain to hide in.

Game #1 - Jeff commanded the attacking Germans, while I ran the defending Russians. In game terms Jeff (the Germans) were the aggressors. The first few turns developed slowly, with only a few thrusts at the enemy. Though by the midway mark both sides had become heavily engaged. As the battle wore on Jeff’s Germans lost a great many infantry, yet almost no armor. As to my Russians, it was the opposite. I lost six tanks and 19 infantry (some of them panzer grenadiers).

Overall the outcome was a function of my Russians taking fewer casualties, as Jeff‘s dice rolling had gone cold near the end. Specifically, Jeff’s Germans lost 2 panzers and 32 infantry figurines. Neither side lost any artillery units. Meanwhile my Russians had only lost 6 tanks and 19 infantry figurines. Scores: Michael W / Russians 7, Jeff G / Germans 5. Duration: and hour and two minutes.

Game #2 - In our second game we played the same scenario again, after turning the board around. Now Jeff ran the Russians, while I commanded the Germans. As in the first game the two elite Russian armor units did very little, as they were jammed up in the rear most of the game. The dice heavily favored my Germans in key battles. Meanwhile Jeff’s Russians were rolling mostly rather poorly.

Jeff’s Russians destroyed 24 German infantry figurines, yet no armor or artillery! My Germans managed to destroy 9 Russian tank figurines, and 13 Russian infantry figurines. Overall our losses in figurines were almost even (24 to 22). Yet my ability/luck was in being able to finish off damaged enemy units. Scores: Michael W / Germans 7, Jeff G / Russians 5. Duration: an hour and one minute. No one lost any artillery today.
