This was another of our irregularly scheduled game sessions. We had two gamers at one table this cold afternoon.
Today’s game was Dave C’s Memoir ‘44: scenario #12 (p.24) of the Breakthrough scenario manual. As such it used the Breakthrough board, which is *much* deeper than the standard Memoir ‘44 game board. The scenario was “Nach Moskau!” (To Moscow!). To win a player had to gain 13 victory medals. As this was a winter scenario we used the white/snow covered side of the board. I commanded the Russian forces defending Moscow, while Dave ran the attacking/invading Germans.
As the board was very large, to speed things up we used the standard “Breakthrough” card deck. For it contained some cards (called “On The Move“) that allowed a player to gain extra movement points. This was needed, since the board was so deep (17 hexes, as opposed to the standard board, which is 9 hexes deep).
Besides the standard units (armor, infantry, artillery) my Russians had a few cavalry units. On the downside, as this was relatively early in the war, I had to contend with the dreaded Commissar. As usual he often restricted my card play, as he had to ‘approve’ any card play I made. This made my Russians slow to react to sudden threats.
After just a few turns Dave’s Germans began racking up victory points by eliminating some of my forward units. By the time he had destroyed five of my Russian units I still hadn’t eliminated a single one of his. Alas this trend continued throughout the game. Closer and closer Dave’s Germans crept towards Moscow.
Today the dice gods certainly favored Dave’ Germans. Oh, I whacked some of his units. But I was having a devil of a time finishing any of them off. The game was about 2/3’s over before I managed to gain my first victory point!
By this time most of my units were on their last legs. Oh, I did finally manage to finish off four German units. But I‘d taken massive figurine losses. The end was nigh. Eventually Dave reached the victory threshold, 13 VPs... game over.
Scores: Dave C 13, Michael W 4. Duration: three hours and four minutes.
