This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We had two gamers today. Luckily there were no loud musicians this afternoon. Though it was just a tad muggy.

Today’s game was my Memoir ‘44. We played three games: the first two twice each, switching sides, so that on each scenario.

First, scenario #45 “River Bug“ from the Eastern Front scenario booklet. The battle occurred on June 22, 1941. The Germans had just crossed the river Bug (by attaching snorkels to their panzers and driving them underwater to the opposite side). As this was an early war scenario we had to contend with the Commissar, who usually hurts the Russian player more than helps him. The attacking German forces consisted of four panzer units, six infantry units, and one artillery unit. The Russians fielded three tank units, five infantry units, an no artillery. Although they did have reinforcements coming, in the form of fresh troops aboard a train, on the way to bolster their defense.

Jeff ran the German side and I commanded the Russians. As to the supply train, I never got it anywhere near the railway station. So its eight Russia infantry figurines never disembarked. Why? Jeff rushed his panzers ahead and blocked the track! Even so, I managed to give as good as I got. It ended up being a very score battle in scores and figurine losses.

Scores: Jeff G / Germans 5, Michael W / Russians 4. Duration: 59 minutes.

We then set the board back up and turned the board around. Now I ran the German side and Jeff led the Russians. This game was also very close.

Scores: Jeff G / Russians 5, Michael W / Germans 4. Duration: 41 minutes.

Our next scenario took place not in mother Russia, but on the sun baked sands of North Africa. Specifically, scenario #34 Knightsbridge. There was almost no terrain; three hills, a three hex long wadi (basically a sunken, dried riverbed), an oasis hex on each player‘s back line, and a town hex adjacent to it (but only on the German back line). As to our forces, the British had eight tank units, and one artillery battery, while the Germans had six panzer units, and three artillery units. The (cautious) British tanks were only allowed to move two hexes, while the German panzers could move three hexes per turn. In essence this was a classic “meeting engagement” type battle. The German player had a hand of six cards, while the poorly led Brits had to make do with a hand of four cards (once again to mimic their timid tactics). Jeff ran the British forces, while I commanded the Germans.

Our armored units immediately headed towards each other. With virtually no terrain, this was not a game of finesse, maneuver, or tactics. We mostly just headed towards each other and began firing. I ran the German side and Jeff commanded the British.

I assumed my faster moving panzers would make quick work of the British tanks, before they could concentrate on me. Alas... no. My dice rolling was below average, so my speed advantage was negated. So a rather short duration for this battle.

Scores: Jeff G / British 5, Michael W / Germans 4. Duration: 30 minutes.

So, Jeff won all three of today’s battles. Well, there’s always next time! I did take some comfort in the fact that the results were as close as possible in scores and figurines lost.
