Fort Worth Gamers: gaming session 01/20/24
Saturday, 01/20/24 1:00 PM to 4:15 PM at the Hulen Mall food court, in southwest Fort Worth, TX
This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We had two gamers (plus one observer, William), on this rather cold afternoon.
Today’s game was my Memoir ‘44; well known to Jeff G and myself. Today we delved into the Winter Wars expansion box for the first time. All of its scenarios are set during the Battle of the Bulge (December 16-30, 1944).
First up, scenario #1 “Longvilly Trap.” We used the “snow covered” side of the game board as this battle took place in the dead of winter. And of course we used the snow covered tiles. This battle took place on December 19th. The map had many roads and frozen river hexes. Plus, a smattering of hills, woods, four bridges, and a road block.
Besides the usual way of achieving victory points (eliminating enemy units), the Americans could also gain VP’s by exiting units off the board edge via two roads. Yet German armored units prowled near the exit hexes, making the American’s journey quite perilous.
As to units, there were some that were new to us; tank destroyers, of which the Germans had two. They shot farther (out to four hexes), but rolled less dice (only two).
In our first battle, Jeff took the Allied (American) forces, while I commanded the German troops. And... to make a long story short, Jeff’s Germans slaughtered my troops. His dice were smoking hot, while mine were stone cold. In the end Jeff’s American’s eliminated 20 of my American figurines, while my Germans only killed half that amount of his.
Scores: Jeff G / Americans 6, Michael W / Germans 1. Duration: 61 minutes. There were 15 discards, and two Combat Cards had been used. Figurine losses: Germans 10, Americans 20!
We then turned the board around and played the same scenario again. Now I ran the American side, while Jeff controlled the Germans. This time the scores were much closer. Jeff’s Germans also won this battle. But it was a squeaker.
Scores: Jeff G / Germans 6, Michael W / Americans 5. Duration: 50 minutes. There were 16 discards, and two Combat Cards had been used. Figurine losses: Germans 8, Americans 23!
All I can say is Jeff’s dice were hot today and mine were not. Though I did almost achieve parity in the second game.
