This was another of our regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game sessions. We had two gamers on this slightly cool afternoon.
Today’s game was my Memoir ‘44, well known to Jeff G and myself. We played some scenarios from the Memoir ‘44 Mediterranean Theater scenario booklet.
First up, scenario #3 “Dug in at Sidi Omar.” Yet another North African dessert battle. Most of the German forces (7 panzer units, five infantry units, and one artillery battery) are on or very near their back line. Their main target, the British infantry behind sandbags on a series of ten hills mid-board.
Yet the British also have four heavy tank units on their base line. Also on the British baseline are three “Exit” hexes that the Germans can pass through and off the board to garner some additional victory points.
Jeff G ran the German side, while I controlled the British in their mainly defensive positions.
On came the Germans, and forward went my four “heavy” British tank units (4 figurines each). They met mid-board and slugged it out. My heavy tanks took quite a toll on Jeff’s German panzers (though not much on his infantry). My dice were hot and I managed to eliminate 18 of the 24 Panzer figurines. I also whacked four German infantry figurines. My casualties were half of Jeff’s.
Scores: Michael W / British 6, Jeff G / Germans 1. Duration: 24 minutes.
Next, we turned the board around and fought the same battle again. Now it was Jeff’s turn to whack my panzers. And whack them he did, destroying 18 of my British tank figurines. He also took out one of my artillery figurines. Meanwhile, I destroyed 10 of his tanks figurines, and 8 infantry figurines. Our overall figurine losses were almost identical (18 and 19). But Jeff had been able to finish off more of my units, hence the lopsided score.
Scores: Jeff G / British 6, Michael W / Germans 3. Duration: 28 minutes.
Next up, scenario #4 “Flanking Maneuver at Bir Hakim.” Jeff took the defensive Brits hiding behind sandbags, two bunkers, and barbed wire, plus an eight hex wide minefield. My attacking Germans consisted of five Italian units (three tank, two infantry), three panzer units, and five infantry.
On came my attacking Germans. By turn three my German had closed the gap, And I should have been racking up kills. Yet the dice had gone stone cold for me! I lost Italian tanks in the British minefield, to no good purpose. And my panzers got nowhere near the three exit hexes on the British back line.
Scores: Jeff G / British 5, Michael W / Germans 1. Duration: 27 minutes.
We then turned the board around thereby changing sides. And... things didn’t get any better for me. My British ended up losing three times the figurines Jeff’s Germans did. Basically my dice rolling was the worst I think its ever been. I didn’t manage to kill a single enemy unit until the last turn of the game.
Scores: Jeff G / Germans 5, Michael W / British 1. Duration: 28 minutes. Oy!
Next up, scenario #5 “Panzers vs. Grants” Yet another North African desert battle. Jeff G took the British troops, while I ran the German side. This was mainly a tank battle, as the few infantry began near their back lines and had trouble getting into the battle. Score-wise this battle stayed very close (ending casualties were 19 to 18).
Scores: Jeff G / Germans 5, Michael W / British 4. Duration: 26 minutes.
Alas we didn’t have time to turn the board around for the rematch. That’ll have to wait until next time.
